I just wanted to share with you my new addition to my Jefferson Nickel collection. #21 of 150 1938 Proof Jefferson Display Pannel.

I have been wanting to add this item to my Jefferson collection for some time now. A Very Rare find! Hope you all enjoy the pictures.

Fleix Schlad had made in 1939 150 Souvenir Pannels Each was signed by him and notarized. The center is a proof 1938 Proof Jefferson Nickel with the obverse facing. The upper right is a photo of his orignal 1938 Monticello design.

The U.S. Mint modified the lettering and details of the Jefferson Portrait and the reverse had schlag create a different depiction of Monticello.
The first design was an art deco design

My self I have two of the reproductions from the FUN show one proof and one matted struck in silver. I only wished the mint was not so uptight and accepted his design in Art Deco. The U.S. would of had one of the best looking nickels ever bar none! Paddy

    Paddy,

That's very nice. I am a Jefferson nickel collector, and I would buy one in a second. I've been looking, but I haven't seen one in years.

Are you saying that the reverse of this 1938 nickel is the art deco reverse?

No it's not but would of been if Fleix Schlag had his way. The mint awarded him the prize for design and at the last minuite asked him to change his design. To the rev. as known today. Thats one reason he made these pannels to show his design as he summited it .

WOW! That is cool! So I am guessing these a pretty rare?
There are 150 souvenir panels, right? So how many were there that were minted? And who minted them? Was it a private mint?

Travis, the coins shown are copies made for the fun show.... only 1938 matched set made struck in .999 silver in mat & proof. As for tha pannel the nickel is a U.S. Mint proof coin not a copy ! Mintage was 19365 struck .... however Schlag though he was going to be able to get as many as he needed to give away as gifts. The story goes he had a hella of a time just getting the 150 that he wanted to make the pannels .Paddy
