I found a error dime in my change jar the other day. The back silver layer is not there. The face is normal , the center is there and stamped like a normal dime. It is thinner than a normal dime. Can someone tell me if this is a common error or anything about it. If someone will tell me how I will post a pic.

If the coin is dated after 1964 it is not silver...its clad...if you weigh the dime that might help...but the photo would be best.

Sounds like your coin is missing one of the outer clad layers. Not a particularly rare error, but it's very unusual to find one in pocket change.

I have no doubt that it is a genuine missing clad error.

Thanks that is cool. now what do I do to clean it and keep it from anymore possible damage for being handled? I have never collected coins, but I am thinking this could be a fun treasure hunt.

DON'T CLEAN IT...it could lower the value as much as 50%....cleaning a coin is a big no-no....If you have a coin shop near where you live I would go and see if they have any NON PVC flips...make sure that they are NON PVC..or ask if they have Air-Tite holders...then put the coin in that BUT HOLD IT BY THE EDGE...or rim...other wise you will have a coin with finger prints showing on it soon...they might not show now but they will and that can lower the value just as much as cleaning.

I see the junk on the obverse of the coin that you are worried about. Looks like candy residue or tape residue of some sort. The ONLY method of cleaning that comes close to being approved around here is a 30 second dip in pure accetone (from a hardware store, not the stuff used to remove nailpolish). After the accetone dip, place the coin in distilled water to wash off the accetone. Repeat the process. To dry the coin, very carefully pat it with a clean cloth, being careful not to rub at all. The allow it to air dry.

Beyond that, as speedy said, cleaning the coin will greatly diminish its value. But removing something that's going to eat the coin is acceptable.

Wow you really have to be careful! As soon as I can find a coin shop I will do the accetone and distilled water. Thank you everyone for the help I have enjoyed reading your board and have really learned alot.
