Hey Ya'll This is kindof a test...I have taken photos of a mintmark and I would like to know if you think its a fake or not...the coin is the only raw key date I have right now (other than the ones that are going to ANACS) and I would like to know if y'all agree with me. Its a 1909S that would grade VG/F....I got the coin from a guy I trust alot. Speedy
Speedy I voted fake , but I could be wrong . The reason I say fake is that the letter looks to blocky or squared for the age of the cent but i'm no pro ! For your sake though I hope it turns out to be the real thing ! Good Luck
this is one of the reasons why I don't feel comfortable buying unslabbed coins. I would never be able to tell if this was a fake.
Thanks guys...I must say at 10x there is nothing to be worried about looking at it...I have looked at a few fakes and see nothing wrong with this one but am not the best collector on this forum and wanted help! This coin will be going to get slabbed sometime this year maybe...I try to get all key dates and simi keys slabbed... Speedy
Looks like a RPM Speedy. I would say real. Looks like, perhaps, tooling marks to the right of the S, but I also see marks in the same direction well away from the mm. My opinion, based on your pic, is genuine RPM. Genuine MM
Well the serifs on the S are definitely too large, so I was gonna say fake. But I hadn't considered an RPM. It could be ??
Nope...I have an old microscope that I hold my camera up to and take photos.... GDJMSP....thanks for your opinion...I'll try to let everyone know what happens when I send it in... Speedy
Sometimes I just want to take credit. We don`t even know if it is. Speedy (enthusiastic as he is) goes with who he knows, which is a good thing.
Bzcollector I didn't mean it the way you took it...I was talking about if the coin was fake or not...I wasn't talking about if it was an RPM.... I have heard of an 1909-S RPM but am not sure if this could be one or not....I guess I'll find out sometime. Speedy
I'm not expert here, but I'll throw my 2 cents into the pot.... The one area of concern for me are the "groves" to the right of the mint mark. They are either die polishing, or evidence of alteration. My gut says what you have is a worn die RPM (credit to BZ ) Whatever it is, good luck Speedy. It still amazes me some times that so small a fleck of copper can be worth so much.
I looked it up in 3 or 4 books and they list 2 RPM's for the 1909-S... What ever happens...If its a fake I"m not going to be mad that I lost some $$ because I'm a collector...and I collect for fun...and if I make money or lose money...but I'll always remember all the fun I've had with this cent...it was my first "key" date!!! Speedy
I just wanted to say that the guy that sold me this coin is willing to let me do a trade...I can bring this coin back and trade it for one that is a little better...I will have to add some $$...but it will be an upgrade for my set. Speedy
... Haha , true , but Speedy probably deleted his pics. , because I do remember that someone said that they deleted its own pics. or something like that .
Go for the upgrade Speedy! That would aleviate you fears about the first one being altered. Plus upgrades are GOOD!
