I really like the op's coin, nice circulated example that looks totally original.
I have this one, without an S, first pic at an angle to show the toning:

Could you explain this further? The 20 cent coin is on my wish list and I would like to learn more!

I hadn't noticed, thanks for pointing that out.
This is a really good looking coin when rotated under a light. The person I bought it from had purchased it from Mark Feld when he was a dealer.

Ill be glad to...as its always fun to share knowledge with someone who has a taste to learn.
A misplaced date is a number that was punched into a die that transfer to the minted coin.
I will try and show you a few examples that I own.
Most of the time the "MPD" is found in the denticales.
The teeth like items on the coins rim .
Now that's not the only place that "MPD"s can be found....on seated coins you can find them in the rock and Liberty gown.
Remember at this time mint workers could drink on the job....not talking water.... :)
Im sure that some may have made a mark or some sort of item on a die so they knew that coin was from a certain die.
If fact the US mint did in fact put a dot on a coin to catch a thief....as he was found with an Indian head cent that had a dot on it,and guess what that batch had not been released into circulation. See the images of a rare 1876 seated quarter below. DSCN7414.JPG.jpg DSCN7415.JPG.jpg 1876 P MPD -002 1 6-3.jpg 20200530_160519.jpg 1876 P MPD -002 2 6-3.jpg
Sometimes it is right in your face, other times its like where Waldo. But a fun variety to discover.
I hope this makes it clear if not let me know...and I will do my best to make you aware what to look for. Paddy

Yeah my variety eye and mind set has spent years trying to remember pups to varieties. The 1875 s is a 2 fer the repunched S and the MPD. Stay tuned ill image my 75 s and post it.

The images are taken with my scope not the best however compare all the specimens posted to get an idea of the varieties. The 1875 s was the highest mintage of the 20 cent coin....finding a die marriage that doenot have the MPD are probably rarer than those that do....still a cool find and a nice addition to any collection.

I just noticed something on my reverse...it isnt the mpd or is it the rpm....but look closely at the "S"
Look at the S ' see that mark near the same location as the ' I placed next to the S'?
Looking under the scope Im thinking that the punch was dropped on the die and just the top serif of the S ' transfered . See that small mark east of the S ' .? Maybe not...never noticed that before.
