Having been laid up for the last couple months the time has given me a chance to revisit some finds as well coins in the collection. This was a very cool bag find that almost never happen....you see the mint never released any uncirculated 2001 P or D Kennedy halfs. Well they did but not until like 8 to 9 years after 2001. Sometime around 2008/09 the mint finally sold rolls and bags of the 2001 P & D. This find was only found in the $100 bags mixed $50/50 P&D coins. As the would never be able to be rolled....never able to be rolled? Correct...as the find was a 2001 Kennedy half that was concaved! Yes sort of spoon shaped....and as you stacked them the stack would fall over as the coins in question had a die crack that connected all 50 stars on the reverse causing the coin to be concaved. "See image" After my first specimen found I ordered like 10 bags. Each bag had about 10 +/- examples of the reverse die crack concaved coin. The reason they were only found in bags is again the coins wouldn't stack...in fact you can spin the coin on its reverse like a top. I've seen bags on the bay several times asking a decent premium. I havent done any roll or bag searching these days.....mostly due to time and finding errors or varieties in bags has become almost nil. Here is a image of two 2001 Kennedy's one flat the other spoon shaped. Look at the connect the dot ...I mean stars... notice the bottom coin looks raised. And the top looks flat. The bottom coin if you placed a drop of water on the obv. Edge the drop would slide down to Kennedys face center coin. Wow $100 2001 P/D mint bags going for $249.00 on the bay.
Interesting that you found multiple examples with weakness on the upper half of both sides, but not back-to-back. I can't wait to hear the verdict on this one! Do you have a side shot that shows the bend?
You know on my old computer I had several shots including several side side shots a including a stack on coins with one of the concaved ones on top. Unfortunately my brother in law while building me a new computer somehow messed up my files. So I lost those images. My phone cam takes horrible pics...never buy a Samsung product again. But it was fun finding these and made a few bucks, and gave a few away to close friends here on ct and in the coin community here in state.
You are my friend lol...never done anything here that would make me not like you. But this is my last one . If you like a 2001 P&D uncirculated ill send you them. Like I said for what ever reason the mint never cut them loose until 7 to 8 years after 01.
That's Ok.... What do you think happened to these coins? Side Note: I was working in the Hampton Roads area in 2009 and went to the local credit union to get some Presidential Dollars. They were all out, but the teller said she just got a box of new half dollar rolls and asked if I wanted any of those. Just then, the guy right behind me in line said, "I'll take the whole box!". I would only take a roll or two, so I let him have the sealed box. I don't recall why, but I had to hand the box to the guy and it surprised me how heavy it was! It was only about a 6" cube, but it had to be at least 25 lbs.
You know thats a question Ive pondered many times. Some how the die warped. Thats the only thing I can think of....as if there was something in the coining chamber Kennedy would have had a face job. And let me tell you this ....this one pictured is 1 die state.....as others had the crack 360 degrees through every star. But to give you a definitive answer I can't but at first was a little unnerved trying to stack coins, that kept falling over....
Yes....however I was robed of the find by a person who was a crook. I met on line he had made sever purchases from me.... he also cheated a friend in Va. Out of some big money. Anyway he went to Ken Potter and cheated me out of the find...at which I called him out on. However this guy wasn't to smart as he knew I had access to sending coins into NGC. He had found like 10 1955 ddo's not the big one but actually the rarer one. In red and red brown color. So he asked me to have them graded for him....I said sure send them down. He did and I sent them in and imaged them...sent him the images...less the numbers. And told him he needed to come up with all the monies he had stolen from us plus the grading fees......well he didn't and I sold them on ebay for over 300 each. Ya dont mess with Paddy I was born at night....just not last night.
