I ordered the 2008 First Day Coin Covers from the US Mint and they arrived yesterday. Never having seen or even heard of these and being curious, I opened the Oklahoma one to see what it was all about. I took the cellephane off it to give it a full look and satisfy the curious side. Now I'm thinking I should not have opened it. Maybe I lowered the value of the whole set or at least the Oklahoma one. Any opinions on this?

There is more value if it is sealed in the white envelope, but there isnt really any value is the first day covers. The 2007 Washington cover sold out very fast and were selling like hot cakes on eBay but it died very fast. I also watched on eBay a whole set of first day cover of the state quarters. It cost the seller over $750 for the set and when he sold it on ebay it didn't even go over $400. I like the cover but I choose not to be the covers anymore.

    NGC also grades the covers.

I've bought three of each of the presidential dollar cover series. They are still in the white envelopes. The Washington cover series seems to be carrying a pretty good value but the others aren't doing so well. I would guess that the value would decrease in half if you opened the box. There are so many for sale on ebay that are still in the envelope. I've also bought the presidential proof sets from each year as well as the clad proof sets. I've opened those boxes to see the coins but I'm extremely careful to not damage the box. I just have to see the proof coins. They are beautiful coins.

I'm collecting only the DC and Territories series. It's short and the covers are scenic. I'm buying three of each, opening one and keeping the other two in the white envelopes.

Thanx! Guess I'll just keep these for myself. Not a real hot seller on ebay. My kids'll enjoy em, I suppose.

Does anyone know why they reduced the mint quantity of the presidential cover series from 50k to 40k? It appeared to happen in 2009. I assume that it is a lack of public interest, which doesn't bode well for the long term value of this series. Oh well, they will make nice coasters from my coffee table.
