it's an indent, from a smaller planchet, prob. a cent. and also a double struck franklin.

Yup, appears to be struck through a smaller planchet. Pretty cool!

I looks like there was a big air bubble in the planchet. lol. That is one cool coin.

    It is struck through something....

Hope it's OK for a new guy to play. :smile

I'll crawl way out on the limb and say that it was first struck with a obverse quarter die. It looks like the head of George Washington poking out there. Then it was struck by the half die.

That is impossible - a half dollar planchet cannot fit into a quarter chamber. You will never see an off planchet strike for a smaller coin on a larger coin. It is impossible for a quarter to be struck on a half dollar planchet, a dime to be struck on a quarter planchet, and so on. The only way to get an off-planchet strike is for the wrong planchet to be smaller than the coining chamber.

But good guess, and welcome to the forums :)

Unique franklin half / Lincoln cent mated pair

This is a unique Error The coin is a Franklin half /lincoln cent mated pair
Mated pairs are created when two or more coins become involved in a male function during the minting process sometimes more then one error can happen involving these coins.Mated pairs even become more desirable when the related coin can be located and matched to one another, This is considered a indent ,and a strike thru a unique one indeed

EDITED, and DutchMan was close he won
