Submitting to NGC… tips?

Hello everyone, well I am about to submit some coins to NGC ( I joined the collectors society )

I just had a few questions:

    1. what kind of flips can I use? Do they care?
I have some large crown sized flips, but they are soft flips. I do not plan on storing them in there, only for shipping to NGC. I wanted the larger size flips so the dollar coins do not need to be squeezed into the flip. I am NOT storing them in the flip, so I am not worried about PVC damage.

    2. packaging, How do you ship your coins?
I was planning on putting the coins in flips, then rubber banding them together ( per NGC’s recommendation ) then placing the coins in a padded envelope. I would then put the padded envelop in a box with the submission form. Is this going to be OK?

    3. Should I label the box in iy way? Or would that be asking for trouble ( someone stealing them )

Any other info I should know?

    Thanks much in advance!

I would guess that like ANACS they would much rather you send them in PVC flips than flips with out PVC...its better for them to use...

I would put the coins in flips and put them in a padded envelope and then in an flat rate envelope that the post office will give you and it only cost $3.85 for shipping and then add you insurance.

If you do you are asking for it :D ;)

When you send coins to ANACS you have to mark what kind of turn around you want (5 day...next day...so on) but NEVER NEVER EVER mark coin or anything to do with coins on the envelop...even when I'm sending payment to "Such and Such Coin Co" I leave off Coin Co..

Please see my posts on NGC in this forum. IMO, you are wasting your money BIG TIME by sending to NGC. But that's just my opinion. Most of the people on this board think NGC is GOD when it comes to grading.

I suggest you call NGC customer service and ask them any and all questions you have. You will find that they are quite helpful and will explain anything you want to know.

If the coins are worth more than a couple or few hundred dollars (up to you), use Registered mail. Otherwise, use Insured Mail. I'm about to do an NCS/NGC submission (my first time, too!) and I'll but using Kointainer Saflips for my coin storage because I'm submitting some high-end proofs that I don't want to haze.

I will give them a call...

I know people have issues with the grading services, but i have been happy with the NGC and PCGS coins i have purchased, I always look at the coin. I have passed on purchasing some because i feel that they where over-graded. buy the coin!

That's an excellent piece of advice. What if you are the guy holding the coin that was grossly UNDERgraded?

I`m about to send some to NGC as well, before my 5 free submissions run out. I was curious about the same things as ranchand. Thanks all.

Then the guy should send them back to NGC for regrading...I think that if NGC agrees with the owner they pay for the loss...
The guy has nothing to be mad at...if NGC is in the wrong they will fix it.....

What?!!! You're joking... right? NGC is going to admit they admit they undergraded a coin by 2 pts? That's a laugh and a half. I sent them a letter nearly a month ago and have received NO response. What an incredibly irresponsible and disrespectful way to treat your customers. I know, Speedy, you think NGC is the greatest thing since peanut butter so it's ridiculous for me to attempt to influence you in any way. I'll say no more on the subject. I'll just let you guys sing their praises to high heaven.

I'm sorry you think so....I think in the past they have
You don't just write and asked toup a coin you send the coin back for the higher ups to look at...
I wrote NGC once and had an email back the next day.
Sorry...peanut butter is better ( !!!) I think ANACS is right up near the top in my book...NGC is better than PCGS in my book any day but I have never seen a coin yet that was graded wrong--I know there are many out there but I haven't run into them yet by NGC...not PCGS I have seen...do you have a photo of this coin??...both sides??
I would love to see it.

Well, Speedy, the letter was not to ask them to up a coin. It was a letter with many questions to their upper managment, and they have thus far ignored it. Like I said however, I am not going to waste any more time debating this with you. Buy all the NGC coins you want; I'll pass on them.

Ok...so have you asked them about what they would do if they agreed with you?...
Also you didn't tell me something I asked...can you post photos so I can see and with seeing what NGC graded it tell you what I think its graded...maybe you and I agree on the grade.

Sorry... I've tried to photograph it but it just doesn't come out right and the scan is wayyyy out of focus. I can tell you though that I showed it to a dealer. My opinion was a 65 FBL (its a Frankie). The dealer thought it was a 66 FBL. Believe me... the coin is real eye-popper. It has only one tiny roll mark on the bell; no other bag marks... nothing! Pass and Stowe is clearly visible to the naked eye, but because of that one mark, NGC bb'd it as having been improperly cleaned. They told me on the phone that anything wrong with the coin gives it an "improperly cleaned" designation even though cleaning isn't the problem. I know the coin wasn't cleaned because I was with my Dad when he got the brand new roll from the bank when I was a child.

Don't get me wrong. It's easy to misconstrue these messages. I hold nothing against you, and my opinion of you is not diminished because you like NGC. That's your opinion and you are entitled to it. I just want nothing to do with them.

I would like to make one suggestion...send the coin to ANACS...they seem to be great with spoting cleaning and such and I hear that they are hard on Franklins...it might work out good for you.
Also please don't get me wrong...I don't have any hard feelings about this...

My recent experience is that both PCGS and NGC will take a coin in their holder which was undergraded and regrade it at the appropriate grade. There is no compensation for the difference-just a nice new slab with the correct (higher grade.)

I know this is an old post, but...

I submitted a coin twice to NGC. Both times it was raw and graded AU55. I felt the coin was uncirculated. I told this to one of the graders and they offered to review it for me for free. While I didn't take him up on the offer, the coin did regrade MS61 (3 points higher) when resubmitted in the holder. Seems like they admitted they undergraded the coin. I also have had several others in slabs regrade go up 2 or more points.

Perhaps you should have called them. They're very easy to get on the phone.

Compensation? Well, the grading services usually do charge for this regrade.

Do you mean a roll mark from
    a. A wrapping machine
    b. A counting machine?

Either of those are body bags, at PCGS and NGC I'm fairly certain. If this is not the case, then I would recommend sending the coin to PCGS :)
