Ive always been pretty impressed with NGCs grading standards, but this quarter I got the other day has me thinking twice.
its a 2009 silver USVI state quarter in PF 70 from NGC, but it looks as though it it couldnt have more flaws on it.
With the naked eye I can see a mark on the face of Washington, and in the "mirror like" back ground there are tons and tons of little white spots. When I put the coin under a light and 5x it looks a lot worse.

    My questions to you all-
Is this normal for the new quarters?
Ive looked online and seen other quarters that are NGC pf70 and the same way.... is it even worth trying to get a regrade, or do new quarters just suck?

Thanks in advance, and maybe ill post some pics later- even in the NGC scans on their site you can see errors on the coin.

I'm not sure about the quarters to be honest, as I've never seen any of the PF70s in hand. I can relate with you about some of these graded coins.

For instance, I received a NGC 2005 PF70 UC Bison and the coin had a tiny hole (not all the way through) on the obverse. I still am shocked it was able to grade out at PF70! Obviously it's human error, and really that goes back to the saying of buy the coin not the holder.

The coins this year seem to be in pretty bad shape compared to other years. Even my 09 proof set was somewhat ugly. Some spots on the lincoln cent proofs and on the nickel. Even the medallion I ordered has spots on it!

Boxchip, I know the feeling, had to send a proof uc 70 Hawaiian quarter back, NGC, had all kinds of funky stuff going on. Before I bought it I ask the seller and he said it was a lighting effect from the picture, when I got it, it was clear it was on the coin!

*sigh* oh well, guess im just beating a dead horse and it all goes back to human error, but 09 coins seems extra crappy to me too :p

Yes I agree with you on this with the 2009 cents. An LP1 rated MS67 BY ANACS had to be totally misgraded. There were wear marks and bag marks all over it. It made my circ. cents look like MS70's. What's going on with all this misgrading. Are they being overloaded?

I sort of have a different type problem. My UHR looks awfully nice to me (i figured a sure 69/ 75% chance of a 70). NGC sent it back in a MS68 holder. At the time, a MS70 early releases would have brought me $1000 + profit.
