I received this coin in a night deposit today and noticed an odd raised area on the reverse, and a slight flattening of one side. From the pictures does it look like an error or post-mint damage?
Post-Mint damage. Those distorted rims are definitely post-Mint damage. The rims simply do not distort like that in the coining chamber. The "raised" area on the reverse corresponds to the flattened area which indicates something crushed the coin in that area. Your coin may have spent some time in a parking lot.
I'm not so sure. This coin appears to have started off badly. Is that a planchet flaw I'm seeing on the reverse running through the "E" in "MONTICELLO"? And as to the rim condition, I thinking an additional planchet flaw that got folded over during striking. Or a small clip. And the Blakesley Effect. OP, before you toss that in the junk pile wait for a few more opinions.
kanga I don't think that is a Blakesley effect. It just looks like 'other side' damage to me. As far as the planchet flaw, probably, and it runs thru the St of States. But, with the other damage? Too much for too little.
Thanks guys for all of the great input. I was thinking the same thing about the planchet on the reverse but was hoping for a llittle more.
It does look like a planchet lamination from the ST up through the E in MONTICELLO, but the areas around the rim are post mint damage.
