At my coin club auction last night, someone brought in 50 Ike dollars with a starting bid of 50 dollars. I bid that, but the guy next to me bought them for $52. I bought 10 of them from him for 10 bucks just to have. I'll give them to my son when I pay allowance or something and he will think they are cool. Actually, I think they are cool too. I love the weight of them.....lol....as a collector, but not as a spender......not sure I'd want a couple of those in my pocket.... Bob
Nope just one of my parents! My mom thought the SAC dollar was a peso! And she has only seen an IKE when I had mine.. I've gotten SAC's and Presidential Dollars before in change, but never an IKE, I think it would be a pretty good find though
I'm 48 and I have never gotten one in change even though I was around when they were being made. I have gotten them at the bank, but only because I specifically asked for them.
I'm 46 Conder, and I remember getting them all the time when I was young.....they were so common, I spent them and didn't collect them.... I got one yesterday from the bank...
If I did not collect coins as a kid in the late 70's early 80's I would never have known about anything before the SBA dollar. I have never received any dollar coins in change anywhere except the machines at the post office and I am 36.
Ike's are and always were my favorite coins ever, to hold "just cuz", with no care regarding grade, touching them barehanded, etc. I was at the Starbucks drivethru the other day, and had no cash, so paid for my drink on the debit card. I always tip them, so I reached into my odd-change-holder (aka cupholder), and handed the kid a SBA. He had that "ehhh, thanks, you cheap #!$%" look to him. Then I had to go through the awkward, 'its a dollar'. He looked at it, said, "oh, cool!", and I went on my way. Doesn't go down like that when its an Ike ; )
