I have trying to build a 1983 MS Set. It is hard to find the ms coins for 1982 and 1983. I went into a local pawn shop to see if they had any silver. I have been buying all of there silver the last few months. I seen an aftermarket 1983 Mint set sitting in the display case. I asked to see it and I thought both of the quarter were MS65 and I thought the Roosies would be MS66. They wanted $40 for the set and I said I'll take it. I sent the coins to NGC that next day. I sent the P & D Washingtons and the D Roosevelt. The P mint roosevelt was a weak strike and missing part of the rim (I didn't have a loupe when I bought the set and must have missed it) so I decided not to send it in. I put the Kennedy's in my Dansco since I thought they would most likely grade MS64. I also didn't send in the Lincoln's or Jefferson's. Well the P washington came back MS66 and the D came back MS64. The D Roosevelt came back MS65, I don't know why!! Here is the Toned P Washington!! Photo By Bob C Here is my set so far, all coins picked raw by me and graded!!
You've got one of the best looking Philly mintmarks I've ever seen on any early 80's business strikes. Usually its just a P shaped blob. Excellent coin. Without the peripheral weakness, it would have graded even higher. Rick L.
Must be fun cherry picking, and then sending them in... Although you could save money finding them pre graded, I admit, not many people are in a rush to get their 1983 mint sets graded... Congrats on your finds
Try - I would buy a handfull of 1983 quarters for $40 if they were graded by NGC 66....or better. I know alot of other guys that would do the same. The mint didn't make any sets in 83.... Speedy
AHhhh, didn't think of that.. I don't know the current market for a MS66 1983 quarter, but it must be worth it for you to want to be a handful, and have some of them graded 66, and pay a pretty little grading fee on each coin, if you sold the 66's, tell me, would you make much of a profit if any? And if no, would it be worth it?
The last 1983-P that was NGC MS66 on ebay(about 2 months ago) sold for $187.50 and there was a 1983-D that was also NGC MS66 that went well over $200. PCGS Price Guide is $250 for the 1983-P & $170 for the 1983-D.
It isn't about money it is more about the joy of collecting and it my birth year set so it is more personal. Anyone can buy coins already graded but it is more of a challenge building a set from all raw coins that you got graded!!
Yes I can see how that would be fun All my coins in my primary sets are graded But I bought them all pre graded... You know, you've inspired me to go out and buy something raw, to get it graded.. LOL
