What are some really good books on gold coinage? Something like an encylopedia, or great information about gold coinage. I have United States Gold Coins: An Illustrated History by David Q bowers...great book, but I'm halfway through it already and I don't want it to end! I don't really want a book with just minting figures or strkes, but rather the history of gold coinage of the united states. Something like Q bowers book. Are there anymore books on this? If anything, I would like a book on classic head quarter eagles to specialize in. I don't plan to buy anymore of them (not soon at least) because of the prices, but this is a series I would like to learn more about. Are there any other good coin books on gold coinage of the united states? The gold dollar book and gold double eagles by D.Q.B's looks good, but I'm not really interested in collecting those. Also interested in gold coin counterfeit detection...I have the Bill Fivaz book and pocket guide, Numismatic Forgery book, and the PCGS counterfeit detection book
That one by Akers I hear is really good... It is a guide to twentieth century gold, or something like that
I heard that one was good but to me , I don't think it tells a history of each coin, just a mintage statistical. By the way, if you want to learn more about the history of gold coinage get United States gold coins: An illustrated history by Q.D.Bowers..best book I ever bought
Unfortunately I don't think you will find what you are looking for so easily. I am doing a paper on the Half Eagles and historical facts on each date but the research is intense and takes a lot of time. Roger Burdette is very close to what you are looking for and focuses his books more on history than coin details but he starts his research a bit after the classic heads and I believe focuses more on silver but gold is included. It would seem that many books, AKERS included, just focus on mintage's and typical anomalies for the date and mintmark and give up on the historical part, basically just small blurbs to hold your interest. There are no books currently other than breens encyclopedia that cover the Classic Head Quarter Eagles and that is only partial at best when it comes to varieties. John McCloskey, by my estimates, should be publishing and in depth classic head variety book in the next year or two.
Have you seen this link for the known varieties of classic head quarter eagles? http://www.harrybassfoundation.org/basscatalogs/BASSSALE2/b2-1-f.htm I remember reading a book from conder101, Reinaness Of american coinage, I would like to eventually own that book and re read it. I want to learn more about minting processes so I can better understand counterfeit detection, and I want to learn more about the different mints regarding gold coinage. I know that dahnolga (sp?) and charolette minted very historic gold coins, however I believe these are very rare. How much would it cost to get a dahnolga mint coin?
Whitman poublishing has several. Try: http://www.whitmanbooks.com/Default.aspx?Page=81&ProductID=0794822541
I have not seen that link but I now know where Heritage got its' A, B, C information. I believe John McCloskey wrote those for the BASS auction but has never publicly given any other info on the Classic quarter eagles and he was also wondering where heritage was getting it's info for current quarter eagle write ups with reference to his name. That is old and there is much more info that will be in his upcoming book. It is a great start though probably enough to keep you busy for a couple years obtaining what was in the BASS collection.
Two I would recommend highly - Encyclopedia of US Gold Coins 1795-1933 by Garret & Guth. And - Early US Gold Coin Varieties - A Study of Die States 1795-1834 by Dannreuther & Bass. A couple more - Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States by Don Kagin. And the entire series of books on gold by Doug Winter. You read and study the above and you'll have a pretty good handle on US gold
I will read all of those then....AFTER I finish this David bowers book on united states gold...thanks for the information, and I look forward to reading about them, especially the fractional gold! I know very little int hat field. Ideally, I would like to specialize in a certain field, such as classic head quarter eagles. I don't think I will purcahse another one any time soon, but I enjoy them alot. The die variety books on early gold, that does not cover classic head gold coinage correct?
" Gold coins of the New Orleans mint." There's a brief intro at the beginning describing it's inception and how operations went there, then quickly transitions into a detailed description of every gold coin the New Orleans mint made. Each is ranked on rarity, goes over types and die characteristics to look for, surfaces, strike, eye appeal, estimated number in existance, etc... I've been kind of interested in N.O. minted coins so I love the book. N.O. only made one classic head $5 and that was in 1839, a couple years after it opened. Which is also one of the few coins in U.S. history to have the mintmark on the obverse. Pretty cool coin.
here's one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-U-S-GOLD-CO...s=65:10|66:2|39:1|240:1318|301:0|293:1|294:50 oops, never mind, yu already have it!
McCloskey published his work on the classic quarter eagles (I believe it was the quarter eagles) in the John Reich Society Journal, and there is also some of his work on the classic head gold (I don't remember if it was the quarter eagle or half eagle) in Americas Gold Coinage, this was the book of the lectures at the 1989 ANS Coinage of the Americas Conference.
False, he published his then current notes on the half eagles only. He has never published his notes on the quarter eagles. That JR Journal was about 20 years ago and he has many more new notes that will be in his upcoming book.
Whoops. You're right. I thought it was a $5 but indeed they were $2.5 quarter eagles. I don't really care for that design but I think that would be a neat one to own.

I checked this out on Amazon, and here's all I got : Whitman Coin Collecting: Starter Set errrr.... ummmm... anything which says "Dannreuther" or "Bass" is probably not a starter set...
Not gonna be a very easy book to find as there were not many copies printed. Mine is the special edition, leather bound, signed and limited to 250 copies. The book was published in 2006 by Whitman. If you use the links for BOOKS found in the Numismatic Resources section you should be able to find one with some patience. And they are not cheap. Mine was several hundred dollars if I recall correctly.
