I have always been able to find several new coins in circulation but this year I have only seen 1 DC Quarter, 1 new Lincoln Cent and nothing else. It seems that these coins are being hoarded. I live in NYC. Usually by the end of June, I have many coins from my change dated 2008 (09), but not this year. What is happening? Are mintages lower?
Production stopped in April for 2009 Dimes and Nickels. I was the first to offer 2009 p dimes on ebay and they sold well. Another CT member has found 2009 p nickels and they sold well. the mintages will be the lowest in 40 years, but still be in the millions (96 mil for 09 p dime, 40 or so mil for 2009 p nickel). No one has found a D in either denomination that anyone can tell. The 2nd penny has been more available than the first as it's mintage is much higher. Elaine on this forum can get you exact mintages and/or you can get them from other sources. Good luck finding them!
The mintage totals are much lower than 2008s. I live in the San Diego area and have not gotten any "extra" "Rail Splitter" Lincolns or Pureto Rico or Guam quarters... Had to go to ebay to get those. Still NO dimes or nickels (those would be "D" for me)... I got "lucky" and actually got two Washington DC quarters in one day as well as five (yes 5) William Henry Harrison dollars in change...
Wow -- I work in DC (live in a suburb) and haven't yet gotten a DC quarter in change. And I've never ever gotten a dollar coin in change. Ever!

They are slowly trickling into circulation, 40 and 50 million is still a lot of coins. It will just take longer to get them going since demand seems low. The latest Coin World seems to indicated that the first batches of the 2009 5 and 10 cent coins went to Puerto Rico. With the bank demand so low in the U.S. I'd imagine many more will sit in storage until they are needed.
That is where Manny got them...the guy in the other thread who posted the sick total he's made. His Dad lives there and hooked him up. Me? I just got lucky and found all of the dimes in the Houston area...
I've always bought my state quarters at shows because I wanted an Unc set. So I don't know the problems of trying to collect them out of circulation. But I'll find out if/when the National Parks quarters are issued. No more paying 2-3 times face. I'll try to get them right out of circulation. And like Sholom, I've never gotten a modern dollar coin from circulation.
It is true that the mintage of the 2009 nickels and dimes are way down from last year...but still there have been a ton made. I have heard some people saying these are going to be "key dates" but with 40+ million of each, I find that hard to believe. They will eventually appear in circulation and will be a bit more rare than 2008...but they won't be keys IMHO. I find that really surprising. I have gotten a ton of them. But, there are a few cities that chose to really push them. Here in Portland, our public transportation ticket machines only give change in them. You put in a $5 to get a $2 ticket for the MAX Light Rail and you get 3 dollar coins back. It's kind of neat.
Good point. Postage stamp machines used to give change in dollar coins too. I had forgotten that. But I've never dealt with them. And our public transportation ticket machines don't give change. Last dollar coin I got in change was in Alaska in early 1964. Probably a common date Morgan.
Now, I wish I could get a common date Morgan in circulation. But then again, I wish I could go to Alaska too. :rolling:
To follow that up, here is a link off our newspapers website from back in the fall. I guess they had a mint bus here getting information out about the coins when they first started it. Sorry, but I had to laugh when I saw: "Can't Find Coins in Change" Instinctively: Can't find coins in change? Isn't that the definition of change?
Well if people not being able to find 09 coins in change is their biggest problem, I'd love to have that problem! I can't find a St Gaudens Double Eagle anywhere in my change...
They still do. Unfortunately, only three Post Offices where I live have the machines; one hasn't been fixed since someone stole the contents of it. 5 years ago.
