I've read that you cut the corners with metal shears.

I use a rotary tool and go along the edge seem, comes right apart.

Can I ask a stupid question, here? Why open a slabbed coin?

Lots of reasons, it happens all the time. Some reasons:

    - You don't agree with the grade and are going to resubmit
    - You want to resubmit to a different TPG but don't want them to see the previous grade
    - You don't like the TPG (ie PCI, SGS, etc)
    - You put your coins in an album

Makes sense now that I've asked. Duh! Someday I may do that and resubmit in hopes that I get a true grading, not a fly-by-nighter, so my heirs know what they have. Thanx BadThad

Do reputable grading companies object to or frown on regrading slapped coins? Do they charge more because they have to open them? Or do they just send em back to you telling you to do it!

For NGC Slabs they open pretty easily, I put the slab in a plastic bag, hold it on its side on a cement floor and whack each of the four sides with a hammer, it then easily breaks into two halves.

PCGS is much more difficult, I do the same procedure but watch out (part of the reason for the bag so pieces don't go flying). Probably easier to use a band saw.
