I've got 2 1830 Capped Bust Halves, and I'm trying to decide if I want to keep both of them, or if I get rid of one which one to keep. Both are graded XF-45, although I think the NGC one is a little undergraded. So, tell me which one you like better. First up is an NGC O-118, R3. Let me just say, I really don't like the prongs, so that is a con for this coin, but being undergraded is a pro for it. Next up is a PCGS O-105, R4. I like that this one is rarer. NGC: PCGS:
This won't be much help for you, but as an avid bust half collector I'd have to keep them both. Both are different, as you so stated by mentioning their Overton numbers. But, if you just want a nice example of the date, the first has much nicer details, at least on the obverse, as I don't see a pic of the reverse. Tough choice....keep them Guy~
I want to keep both, of course, but budgetary constraints will not allow it at this time, I don't think. That and there's a sweet 1834 I've got my eye on
I agree that the prongs are really bad, too bad that you couldnt have picked this coin up before the grading companies slabbed it.
If you give one of them to him, and give one of them to me you won't even have to decide! lol If I had to choose I'd keep the NGC, but their both really nice. :thumb:
Tough call! I think I prefer the PCGS coin, there is a toning streak on the NGC example that is a little annoying to me; but they are both really nice coins, and I had to be that nit picky to decide on one!! You might as well flip a slab and call heads or tails!! You have excellent taste in bust halves, imo.
I guess my neurons take a different path, to me the NCG is far ahead of the other. Not even sure I would buy the second one, the color disturbs me even though it is slabbed. The first has less wear, some appearances of luster, beautiful old patina. Jim
there is no choice for keep 'em both. but if you aren't going for Overtons, then the R-4 is betterer.
Great plan! I voted for the NGC coin so he could at least send me the PCGS coin - but I will take either one. Now we need the mods to change the poll so we can vote on his next purchase.
Not considering rarity or slabs, I like the NGC one. From me that says a lot since I really don't like most of what I see in NGC slabs. The PCGS one has lighter fields which to me means it may have been cleaned a little in the past but maybe not. As you so noted the NGC one has a bit more detail. It stands out and for a type coin that would be a plus for me.
