I recently bought one...and have seen them advertised as rare, and only a limited ammount of Silver Dollars are done this way. Just really how many are done this way?
It doesn't really matter how many are made - these coins are considered altered & damaged by most collectors and will never have a value above the metal content.
Oh aye....I have an unaltered 2004 silver dollar....I bought this because I think its beautiful and a great convosation starter. P.S I doubt many modern day coins will have much value above its metal content, they must make 1000s and 1000s of silver dollars each year.
I saw them on ebay for sale along with thousands of other "colorized" and "hologram" coins. I guess these and all colorized coins should really be called Commemoratives, Souvenirs or Tokens. They are in reality, a novelty item! I have several in my collection but categorize them as tokens. Usually the colorized ones honoring a historical event or the military ones are what I look for.
Snce they are colorized by a private company after they left the mint they can make up more of them any time they get orders for more of them. They are only limited by the number they can sell.
I do regret buying a gold plated one though. Im a silver coin collecter and it looks so out of place.
