Ebay #3951791255 Has anyone else noticed a new grading service "PGS". Out of curiosity I have requested the address of this service from the seller but as yet I haven't received a reply.
Looking over quikley, thank god eveything is not graded ms70/Pr70 like another grading company we know.
I looked really hard at the label at the top of the plastic and came away with this: http://www.pgsgrading.com They have an "About Us" link on their home page but it doesn't really say much and certainly doesn't say how long they've been doing this. They are in Chattanooga, TN. It also looks like they grade sports cards. This sounds like a knock-off from SGS or at least a copy-cat grading service. They probably figured "Hey, it looks like we can get away with this sort of thing so why not do it too?" There are a lot of similarities.
Be Carefull With Pgs Slab Purchases THERE ARE NOW TWO DIFFERENT "PGS GRADING SERVICES". ONE IS "PROFESSIONAL GRADING SERVICE" AND THE OTHER IS A BRAND NEW ONE CALLED "POPULATION GRADING SERVICE". I'M CURRENTLY TRYING TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE LATTER. I PURCHASED A COIN SLABBED BY PGS (PROFESSIONAL), OR SO I THOUGHT. IT WAS THE WORST SLAB I EVER SAW. THERE WAS "TAMPER RESISTANT" TAPE ON THE SIDE (NOT A SONIC SEAL), THERE WAS NO BAR CODE NOR WAS THERE A CERTIFICATION NUMBER!! THE WORST THING WAS THAT THE COIN RATTLES INSIDE THE SLAB!! BUYERS BE WARE !!!! DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE ANY INFO ON "POPULATION GRADING SERVICE" I'M TRYING TO GET MORE ON THEM FROM THE COMPANY THAT SOLD ME THE SLABBED COIN. IF INTERESTED, I WILL KEEP YOU GUYS & GALS INFORMED.
My favorite part of their about us page was this: "PGS has a team of extremely qualified and knowledgeable professionals grading your items. All of our grading staff have many years experience in item collecting and have been trained to grade to PGS standards." At least they're honest about the fact that they use their own standard instead of a recognized standard for grading coins. anasaziok Does your slab look like this?
Welcome to the forum anasaziok. It really isn't necessary to "shout" by leaving your caps lock on. A Google search on "PGS" brings up Professional Grading, but not Population Grading; and a search on "Population Grading" is unsuccessful, so they must be very, very new.
There is actually a third "PGS": Patriot Grading Service. I bought a grab bag of "certified" coins just for ha-ha's a few months ago and several coins slabbed by this PGS came in the package. Pretty low quality grading: an XF-40 (at best) Franklin half "certified" MS-63 and (my favorite) a quarter "certified" 1958-S MS-66 (not a typo - '58-S 25 cents). The encapsulations are Coin World generics and the slabs' labels are computer-generated using cheap copy paper and low quality ink. Google away - nobody's gonna find any info on Patriot Grading Service unless this forum and this thread get indexed. BTW, the seller was NARUed by eBay. Too bad - those grab bags were fun! Fred
I am not aware of Patriot or Population grading services. I do have an example of the Professional grading service. I also haveCoin World shell with the tape on the side, I forget what that company name was. (It might BE Patriot.) This one will wind up listed in Miscellaneous in the book because it fails the test for being a service since the holder is not sealed and the coin can be switched. The tape is just on one side and the holder itself is not sealed. So you can open the opposite side and open the slab like a clamshell.
Pgs Certification Sorry, went on vacation! My slab looks exactly like that! I also went to that same web but it turns out that that was not "Population Grading Service" Does your slab have a certification number on it?
Did you get the coin from someone called "Numismaticbureau"? They refused to answer any inquiries I have regarding "Population Grading Service". They supplied me with the name only! I think that this is very close to FRAUD. I think thay are slabing on their own, but that's only my opinion.
Here is a link to PGS website. I don't know if this is the same company or not. There are so many fly-by-night grading services now that it's getting hard to keep track. http://www.prograding.com/internetimagescoins.htm Sorry, I should have read through the prior posts. This website is the same one previously posted. numismaticbureau used to be antiquitybureau and they are not a seller that I would purchase from. I'll take a look at their PGS slabs and see if they are similar to those on the website. I looked at the website and, since it's definitely not the same company, I emailed a link to one of numismaticbureau's auctions, explaining how this seller could give them a bad name. Guess we'll see what happens
PGS Grading Just won 1 MS70 Franklins and 1 PR70 Franklin (both 1960 P) on AOL. The coin was sold by numismaticbureau and they were slabbed and graded by PGS. Now I am not a pro; i just got back into the hobby this year after a 35 year absence. Regarding above, I was sent two MS70 Franklins. There is a good deal of bag marks more then i would have expected on an ms70 coin.. I don't know the correct term; but they also had "pock" marks in key places on the coin (on the bell and on Franklin's shoulder)... Someone in this forum said stick with the major grading services... So far s/he has my vote.
Did you notice the CoinWorld logo at the bottom of the slab. These holders are avail. from Amos Advantage (as well as ANACS style). I buy them to store and display my better coins. Buy a few hundred, make-up a fancy label and Shazzam, you just became a grading service!! Time and time again, if you must have slabbed coins, then buy from the big 3...PCGS, NGC, ANACS and maybe also ICG!!!
It does have a coin world logo... If you really wanted to do it right - a bar code and maybe a hologram to go on the label and one could really do some cool stuff. All I can say is i bough not only one, but two... I thought i was buying a PCGS graded coin and wondered why no one was bidding on this. Live and learn
Howdy Segie - Welcome to the Forum !! It may be a small consolation, but you are not alone in that you were fooled. The number of those who have been taken advantage of in this way is quite large !! But consider this - many of those folks purchase entire collections 1 coin at a time before they figure out the truth - if ever. And some of them are well educated professionals, doctors, lawyers and the like. You only bought 2. I'd count your blessings.
