I would like to see 100 different thieves try to break into a high quality gun safe. I'd like to see how long it would actually take an average theif, unfamiliar with a safe and not instructed on what to do. Large safes are not easily stolen whole. Especially not without somebody noticing. That would be a very risky thing to do.

I agree with the security system idea, dogs and being creative.

Silica gel is an amazing, rechargeable thing. Is 23% humidity ok?

Can you actually get a small fire safe down to 23%?

I understand that a lot of collectors like to enjoy their collections at home on a regular basis. I do too and I keep a small amount of coins around as I acquire pieces slowly. With other items of greater significant value, I feel safer having them in a SDB and so don't have to worry about home safes being compromised in any fashion or relying on weapons or animals to protect these things. No government can ever be fully trusted, I suppose, if they possess the powers to seize property and impose limited rights of citizens, however, some of us do live in countries with a greater sense of democracy reinforcing that these nightmarish scenarios do not happen. But that's a whole issue to discuss in and of itself and not my point here.

I'm making mention of the benefits of SDBs. I went to college out of state and did not wish to move my coins with me. I stored them in a SDB and while away I felt my collection was safe. As I acquired new pieces and made return trips home, I made special visits to my SBD to deposit new coins I'd procured and wished to store. I treasured those trips as they were infrequent and I could really admire my coins when I opened up the box.

I continue to store coins in my SDB and always look forward to visiting them a few times a year when I need to access them. I think that even though they are stored in a bank vault and I have limited access, that it continues to make my appreciation of these coins greater so the act of going to visit them is a very special thing for me.

Fortunately, my bank doesn't charge me for each visit as someone else noted in this thread, which I think is really bad customer service practice, since these are customers already paying for their SDB service on a regular basis. This has been my personal practice with my coin collection in SDBs and while never an absolute in security, it's a much better level of security than I can provide or wish to defend at home, giving me the convenience and greater certainty of always having my collection available to me and the money otherwise spent on a safe or a home owners replacement policy which I can devote to buying more coins.

With a Silica gel pack recommended for a 33 Cu. Ft. space? Yup. When it creeps up into the 40% range, time to recharge.

I'd prefer to keep my coins at home for easy access, I love looking at they're designs. My bank also charges fees for SDBs, and I wouldn't like to pay these monthy :D.

I wonder how many people are aware that the pandemic level was recently raised to level 6 and it's possible, legal implications. Ever hear of martial law? Right around the corner. So the people that think their valuables are "safe" in the bank's possession..I ask, safe from whom? You actually trust the lunacy of that whole system and the criminals that occupy those corridors these days? We have warrantless wiretapping., every stroke you make on a keyboard's data is stored for future scrutiny by whomever for whatever reason. If you think property seizure isn't a real possibility, especially in the current climate with the dollar soon to be worth nothing, insurmountable debt that is at this point impossible to get out of (as a nation), the Bernie "Madoff with everyone's futures" and the like (trust me...he isn't the only one..there are many more like him), the "federal" reserve (no more federal than "federal" express) and it's resistance to ever being audited (cause if it was audited, the fraud would be incalcuable), then you are very sadly mistaken. Anyone remember the 2.3 Trillion (with a T...that's a thousand billion) missing from the Pentagon just prior to 911?, or the pallets of cash "missing" in Iraq? I could go on and on but all I'm saying is blind faith to our beloved system and it's leaders leaves much to be desired. They can and will, do anything they want to, including property seizure, moreso even unstable times. I would call today unstable. But hey, go ahead, put your stuff in there..it'll make mine more valuable when it's gone. Besides, the vaults are nearly inpenetrable, as already pointed out, and we can trust em.

"Rumor" is right. Just like all the other whining, it's BS. Can the fear-mongers actually show me a first-person account of these horrible "complete and total loss of their civil rights" ?

    No ? I didn't think so.

The reality is you have more to fear from being run over by a stampeding herd of turtles than the government breaking into your safe deposit box.

I use a safe-deposit box. I just make sure at least one other loved one has authority (and a key, and know-how) should something happen to me.

Upon death of box-holder, most states authorize banks to seal the box pending probate of will. That's not "draconian", it's perfectly reasonable common sense. But that's another reason other loved ones should have access.

True, they aren't "made for coins", but they don't need to be. They will have humidity similar to ambient air, so use dessicant. I use rechargeable Eva-Dry; keeps humidity around 15-19 %rh.

I have a safe AND a bank deposit box. Any time I'm gone from the house overnight, all the best coins are in lockdown at the bank. All the other times, most of the best ones are there. Very small percentage of my collection's value is at home at any given time.

Every week, I shuffle 'em around and bring home some beauties to enjoy.

If you are that concerned about our "system" as a reason not to use a deposit box, you should also be as or more concerned about keeping valuables in your home. After all, if, as you fear "they can and will, do anything they want to, including property seizure, moreso even unstable times", your home certainly wont be immune. One need not have "blind faith to our beloved system", in order to feel our valuables are safer in a bank than in our homes.

Also, realistically, I don't see what the pandemic level has to do with martial law. I'll take the over action on that being "right around the corner".

Safer with me than with them...as for martial law, do a little research on the executive orders available at the stroke of a pen as a result of level 6.

and you are correct on one thing..it has nothing to do with the pandemic itself, but the excuse it gives for enactment of "emergency' legislation (dictatorial style).

My credit union has safe deposit boxes, 25 dollar a year fee, no other charges, are banks more expensive, what kind of fees would they charge?

I would not worry about the govt siezing your collection unless you are involved in some criminal activity, then they might sieze anything they think came from the proceeds of the criminal enterprise.

SDB are the safest as I can tell , my coins are either slabbed or in Intercept shield holders , and slabs are in IS boxes . Just make sure your SDB is higher up , not near the floor where floodwaters are likely , also check your coins regularly , like every few months at least , once I quit collecting for about 10years , never checked my SDB , when I finally did , several were ruined , this was before widespread slabbing and high quality coin holders .

Did you know that in Texas it is illegal to take more than 3 sips of beer while standing, or in Nebraska, a child's parents can be arrested for them burping in church, or that is Pennsylvania, a husband must have permission from his wife before purchasing alcohol? Ridiculous but true. Any one of these would make you guilty of a crime, therefore technically a criminal technically engaging in criminal activity. The patriot act has it's own host of all by itself. Google it. I guess you're good with that though.

I am not real good at googling, sometimes I will want to look something up and before I know it I am following some link to something entirely different. As for all those various laws, I Have heard many like them, there are hosts of laws that are no longer enforced, if they ever were enforced. laws should have a freshness date on em, they make thousands of new laws every year, maybe we should elect some legislators who promise to get rid of laws.

God only saw the need for ten commandments, our elected gasbags couldnt make a parking law without 223 whereases and wherefores, and just in case someone starts thinking they understand the law, they go and write parts of it in latin just to throw you off. At least they dont do as some writers do and post greek quotations in the original cyrillic, but if everyone started picking up latin they might resort to cyrillic.

Chances are that if an actual scenario like this would go into affect, there is no way everybody would all get hit at once. SDB's would be the first to be compromised. Then maybe some homes, before the word would get out on the internet. The rest who still had access to their own stuff could most likely have everything buried beneath a large tree in a matter of hours. In hopes they live to see a better day.

Worst case scenario of course. But it's not wise to just assume the way things have been will be the way they will always be. What would anybody here have said to you had you told them 10 years ago that GM would file for bankruptcy in 2009? They would have laughed it off as being impossible. As far as that stuff goes, there isn't much that is completely out of the realm of possibility IMO. Many things are possible.

People think because we are supposedly civilized that we are safer.
All people are is lazier and more complacent, unwilling to think about negative possibilities because it's unsettling. It's more palatable and comfortable to remain naieve. Which is exactly what any oppressor would hope for. The most perfect, easy setup for them. The masses ridiculing the prudent for being 'conspiracy theorists'.

I think the best protection is for one to just keep their mouth shut as much as possible around people you associate with in daily life. Don't assume everyone is your friend, trustworthy or that somebody isn't listening to your conversation.
