Hello, made a new purchase today, a 1922 Peace dollar. The price was 35.00 originally, but the dealer saw that I was 14 and a aspiring coin collector, so he gave me 25% off. I quickly lept at the deal. I'm not to good at grading yet, could you guys give it a grade? Thank you! (Also, one weird thing, is that out of it's sleeve case, it weighed 28.2 grams, instead of the (dont take my word for this) what I believe is the 26.7 normal weight. Does this mean anything?) -Jordan
Looks like a nice coin! That being said, you definitely overpaid a little IMO unless it is a 65 which I doubt. At most maybe $20 for a raw BU 1922. Hard to grade from your scans though. Try using a camera instead of a scanner. BTW I'm 14 too.
The most I would give this coin is a MS 62 MAYBE BY THE PICS. THERE SEEMS TO BE DISTRACTION MARKS IN THE FOCAL AREA THERE ARE SOME BAG MARKS AND BLEMISHES ON THE OBVERSE FIELDS, THE REVERSE LOOKS BETTER WITH A FEW BAG MARKS THE LUSTER IS STILL THERE THE EYE APEAL IS NOT ALL THAT GREAT JC
It's so hard to tell from photos, but this looks above average for raw common-date Peace. $35 minus 25% = $26.25, which is a good greysheet price for MS63 certified. They rarely slab these at 63 and below b/c the grading fees are high relative to the coin's value. It's possible yours could slab MS64 (a $40 value). Looks pretty good. I like it ! :thumb:
I agree 900. This coin has above average luster and strike. 1922 is a relatively common date, but this coin is a beauty!
Thanks guys! Should I get it graded? This would be my first graded coin, but because of it being my first, I have no idea on what the process is. Could you guys fill me in? Thanks! -Jordan
I agree with what others have said. This coin is in the MS63 range and looks very attractive from your photos. The price you paid ($26) is very fair and it sounds like you have a nice dealer. You should not get this coin graded. The grading fees will cost as much as the coin. If you want a slabbed common date Peace Dollar, then you should just buy one. The choice is yours. You can send your coin in and have it graded or you can buy an already slabbed coin for the same price. Would you rather have one graded Peace Dollar or two Peace Dollars, one graded one raw?
there is no reason to slab this coin. It's value doesn't justify any grading. Store it in an inert flip or a 2x2. Enjoy it. It's a nice coin.
I'll go with Just Coins and say a solid 62. It has a few tow many marks for me. Nice coin.. Maybe a 63 if I had to grade in hand.. Not a bad pick up..
MS63, good luster, just a good looking coin, with not too many problems, really not a whole lot at all The price you paid was a price I might have paid, and I think you did alright Slabbing the coin, doesn't do you any good, unless this coin was maybe a MS65 or higher, the grading fees would be expensive, and you could be spending that money on other coins
PCGS will grade coins like those for $18 a pop. My guess is ms65 but no idea what PCGS will say. I would grade that coin if I owned it along with several other coins. Go buy some more nice coins, get your 25% discount and send them in at $18 a pop, ship like 5-10 at once to save on shipping. I did that myself and made some MS63's and MS64s on the morgan dollars. The sellers who sold me those coins claimed they were "gem bu" and that means ms65. Well my coins are still very nice, didn't quite get MS65 this time. I will be trying again in the future when I buy more raw coins to send in.
