This is a highly detailed, and I believe original capped bust quarter I received today. It is a dark chocolate color, and I had difficulty capturing the coin correctly on camera. Some subdued luster remains on the fields and devices. I believe it to be AU.

That;s a very nice coin. First year of the reduced diameter struck in a collar.

It is always nice to find original crusty busties... :)
Yours seems like a nice example, with very good details! I'm not seeing a whole lot of wear on the coin, so if it is an AU, AU55/58 for me ;)
    Great coin

Few reverse rim ticks, but looks AU to me and B-2. Nice coin.

Thanks. I took a chance on this one. It is darker than I'm used to for my type set, but the price was right and it is very clean and well detailed under the thick chocolate toning.

    Nice coin.
If the rest of your type set closely matches it you've got something really good going for you.

And I know what you mean about "darker than I'm used to".
    I've got some like that.

What I'm curious about is "the thick chocolate toning".
Isn't that an unusual color for a silver coin?
Is it possible that the coin has been coated (lacquer)?

I wonder about dark brown coloring too: I have this 1847 dollar in my "short set" and it is a deep, chocolate brown- I overexposed the photos a bit to show more detail- I don't think it's been coated with anything; I wonder if it may have been owned by a heavy smoker at some time-- when I see that dingy brown I think "tar and nicotine!"

Dang! I posted the wrong one, although that one is pretty crusty. Here, for your viewing pleasure, I present Countess Chocula (& her feathered sidekick, Cocoa):

Thank you for the comments! The color is unusual, and I suspect the toning is due to the means of storage, possibly nicotine related..lol. I don't think it's lacquered, but that is my extremely amateur opinion since I have no lacquered coins to compare it to. It does have some remaining luster, and the surface quality itself seems original. I'm almost tempted to send it to a TPG and see what they say.

ksparrow, for some reason I'm not getting any of your images as they all say "deleted"..:(

I rearranged my photobucket albums, I had everything in 1 album (!) so they woudln't link. Should be ok now. Wasn't trying to hijack the thread, just thought I'd show some other brown silver. If your coin doesn't have a shiny surface, I don't think it's lacquered.

Johnny, that is a very pretty bust quarter, nice and original. I personally like the dark toning. If you do send it in, curious to see what PCGS will grade it at.

PS -Kaz, you can't get more original in toning than that 1843 dollar you posted!
