Just picked this up yesterday afternoon. I hadn't seen one of these before yesterday. They are not totally uncommon but relatively common. They do command a bit of a premium tho.
Dutchman, Nice coin and nice Over Date! I would love to on a specimen but I am sure that there are way out of my budget! Frank
I love overdates. Varieties on gold are cool, and uncommon from what I understand. The only ooverdate I currently own is a 29/27 Capped Bust Half.
This is one of the nicest and most inexpensive of all gold overdates. As much as 1/4 of the total mintage were struck from dies that received blows from both 1908 and 1909 hubs. You should be able to pick up a good looking AU for only a little more than a normal date. There was an article in Coin World about 3 years ago on this variety. RWB
Well the pictures are great, but that coin is amazing! You gotta be proud of that one! Very nice coin
The 1909/8 $20 is a very cool coin and you posted a pretty nice example. Like RWB said, the premium on an AU shouldn't be too much as it's not that tough of a coin to find. However, once you get to MS examples, the prices on these (as well as the regular 1909 for that matter) go up significantly. In all grades though, the 1909/8 commands a little bit of premium over the regular 1909 because it's the only overdate in the St. Gaudens $20 series. Here's my example which I bought as a NGC AU58 and crossed it over to PCGS to include in my Registry set. I think I paid around $1300 for it at the time when a regular 1909 in the same grade was going for maybe $1100.
