Ordered my 2009 UHR Double Eagle

I wish I had ordered one of these earlier in the year when the price was a bit lower, but wasn't collecting much back then. Anyway, the price dropped a bit yesterday and I went for it. I think it is a beautiful coin.

But I have a question. Does it make sense to have the coin graded once I get it in hand? I see MS70s selling for well over double the US Mint cost. Not that I expect there to be much chance of me getting an MS70, but why not find out?

You might want to re-check the sale prices. The only coins going for an 80% premium are 70's that are First Strike, which you won't have. The regular 70's are $1800. The non 70's are $1400-1600. Once you pay fleebay & Pay enemy, and the TPG you need a 70 just to make a buck.

The mintage on these is through the roof so I will pass (plus they are really expensive)

Well I don't know that under 70 K would be through the roof, nothing like the 2009 Dimes and Nickels.. LOL! :D
But I will say this, it is an ounce of gold, and arguably one of the most beautiful cereal bowls, I mean coins, ever.. :D
I say keep it raw, and enjoy your coin

Wow, not much love around here for this coin. I don't share the concern about the mintage numbers. In any case, I view this coin more as a collectable than an investment in gold bullion. But if I did get it graded, and by some chance I got an MS70, that wouldn't hurt down the road. And I'm fine with it not being a first strike :)

Inspect the coin carefully. If there are any visible flaws without magnfication, the odds of 70 are very low. That said, I think it is something like 30% to 40% of coins getting 70 at PCGS, so the odds are not all that low. You can do the math as far as whether it is worth it.

Personally, I don't see why the 70s sell for much premium given the percentage of coins getting that grade. I would expect the premium to decline latter, so if the desire is to make money, I would sell the 70 as soon as it comes back and buy another one from the mint, keep the second coin raw. That's what I would do, but everyone is different.

    Good luck.

If the mintage were in the 7K area I may pull the trigger (if I had the dough).

Keep the coin in it's original mint packaging. With all the folks cracking these coins out chances are that a specimen in OGP will become a real collectible in the future. Just my thoughts...

Yes, I think keeping it in the original mint packaging is the way to go. I guess I got a little caught up by the idea of owning an MS70 coin. But I'm not looking for the quick buck, so I'll keep it as is.
