To be struck in gold? It had to be an inside job. Also the silver. They are spectacular coins though. Very nice!

Well, that is not permitted either. It is called double posting. The other thread will be merged with this one as per the rules.

But just as a way of explanation regarding your first comment - what is meant by "you can copy a portion" is explained in the Coin Talk Rules section. It is as follows -

If you wish to share, please by all means do so. But do so in the right way. Copy the first sentence or two and paste them if you must, but it is preferable to just use your own words as an introduction and then post a link to the article you wish to share.

So copying several paragraphs and posting them is not permitted. Not berating you, just trying to explain so that not only you, but others as well, understand the rules.

The more I think about this, the more amazing it gets.
Not only is it an error that causes me to really have to stretch my imagination as to how it could occur
    BUT
this thread is titled "Finest Known..."

That implies there's more than one (actually, more than two)!

Off metal errors are rather easy to explain and they happen far more often than most people think. The mint uses hoppers to carry planchets to the coin presses - it is quite easy for a single planchet of one metal, say gold, to get stuck in the hopper and the next time that hopper is used to strike coins of another metal, say copper, that stuck gold planchet gets dislodged and and is struck with the dies for the copper coins. It still happens today even.
