So today, I went to my LCS for the first time since September. They have a good bulk box of foreign coins, and for most coins, it is relatively overpriced at 50 cents a piece, but there always seems to be a few proverbial gems in the rough. Needless to say, it proved to be a very good visit.
Dang! I haven't been to my LCS since pre-Covid times. They had a bin of world coins that are 10/$8. Way overpriced. Though one time I got lucky and pulled out a 1932 Mexico Peso. Still not nearly as great as your find. Congrats!
The funny thing is that this isn't even my best find from this particular dealer. The first time I ever visited back in 2019, I found a Civil War Token that I later sold for $70 on eBay.
Visited the local gold & silver buyer yesterday. CT was down Just wanted to watch the show, didn’t sell anything Occupied myself in the Foreign Coin junk box Popped $3 to pay for heat & lights The Saudi is for a girlie friend Don’t tell my wife
Who's the Mexican dude wearing the doo-rag? Just looked him up... https://www.britannica.com/biography/Jose-Maria-Morelos
What do they say when you buy it from them? Are the mad that you found silver in there or are they happy for you? Lol That would hurt to sell silver for 50 cents a piece
They could care less from what I've seen. However, I cannot help but think that they purposely seed it sometimes with better coins. @Matthew Kruse
I don't know how a coin shop misses obvious silver like that. I can see the smaller ones maybe, but the 5 mark?
It was honestly quite a surprise. I've found plenty of smaller pieces of lower purity foreign silver over the years, but nothing with such a high ASW like a 5-Mark coin.
My best cherrypick is a very worn 1932 D in the quarter bin for $5 The D is barely visible but it's there i still have it.
That's quite impressive @potty dollar 1878. How badly worn would you'd say it was PO-01, FR-02, or AG-03? Regardless, my best individual cherry pick was a 1711 shilling at a coin show in Florida a few years ago.
It Basically looks like this but with less detail on the reverse like half the MM is gone but recognizable.
My best junk bin find was this gold Turkish 25 kurush (sorry for the blurry pic) which cost 15 cents. But I can understand how this was overlooked because you could mistake it for a cheap belly dancing token or something. I also found this Chinese 1 jiao in a junk bin a few months ago for about 20 cents. This might actually be worth more than the gold coin.
