I am a beginner collector and have focused on proof US modern commemoratives dollars. I have a question regarding value. Is a proof coin of higher value if it is the original US Mint packaging?

To some folks they are and to others the packaging doesn't mean a thing. So it is all according to who you are talking to. You will get a lot of different answers on this one so I can only say my dealer buys the coin NOT the package when I sell him anything and he goes strickly by the Grey Sheet. If you are like me, you are probably filling an album and for all practical purposes intend to keep the coins for long term? You will have to make a decision just as I did and live with it. Keep the packages or pitch them?

    Tom,

I collect both ways. Sometimes I collect commemorative slabbed coins and sometimes coins in the mint packaging. I'll just buy whichever is the better price for what I want. But I don't collect coins that are neither slabbed nor in the mint packaging. I consider the packaging an offset to the third party grading, with about a PF67/68 equal to having the package (my own rule of thumb). At some point in the distant future, so many commemoratives will have been slabbed or have had the packaging tossed in the trash that I suspect the original sets will become more desirable for some collectors and will go to a premium from where they are now. But it is impossible to prove that theory. In the end, it will come down to having a nice coin, but a very large percentage of the modern commemoratives are in extraordinary condition and I like the presentation in the mint package.

I know of more than a few dealers who won't buy modern commems from collectors at all without original packaging - many collectors feel the same way. Unless of course the coins are certified.

Couldn't agree more! Just follow the postings on ebay and it is clearly visible that less and less original sets are showing up and more slabbed commem. are appearing. I definately think I will keep mine original and fall into the "rarer" category. You may also notice that generally the original packaged sets tend to get more bids than their slabbed counterparts (with the exception of the super high grades).

    modern commemorative coins

u.s. modern commemorative coins with original c.o.a. and box or sleeves will certainly command a better price. even double it. nowadays, dealers were selling coins with capsules only. simply because those original collectors or investors did not take good care of it. and sell those unwanted coins to the dealers. thus the dealers have to sell it at a very low price or near its bullion value. now you want to sell those with coa, box and /or sleeves that you taking good care of it for so long. they will try to cheat you. be smart. don't sell it cheap. a lot of collectors will buy those original mint packaging even at $20 plus for 1983 olympic, 1987 constitution or 1988 olympic. if those set were really like just arrive from the u.s. mint. won't they?. i will. remember, right now, the newly minted commemorative coins cost between $33.00 to $39.00 when you order directly from the u.s. mint.

When they arrive from the mint they're in the mint packaging but not protected right? Do you switch them to Air-Tites?

    commems values

you don't have to switch from original mint plastic case to airtite. i got some sets way back 30 to 40 years. it remains new. you can use sandwich bag to seal the whole plastic case or including the sleeves too. in this way, the whole set will be new and protected forever.
