No official grading with this but need your opinions to better hone my grading skills as well as my picture-taking ability. Any and all opinions, negative or positive, will be appreciated. Dave
It looks very nice, that is for sure! The fields are very clean, and the face isn't that beat up at all! I was wondering if I could see a picture for the obverse, like the reverse, displaying the coins true color. Looking at these pics, I'd say a MS64, but I'd like to see an accurate picture of the obverse before saying anything official
from the picture and it may just be a light reflection but it looks like some light wear on the eagles breast, some obvious bag marks on Miss Liberties cheeks, I would give it a MS61, but it could range up to a 63 or down to a au59. From what I have seen photos can either enhance or detract from a coins real condition.
T$, I knew you'd be the first reply:thumb: How's this pic? This picture taking thing is not an exact science...took 5 new shots and only this one came out right
That helps a little... I honestly have to say it is a MS64, and maybe on a good day a 65. Here is an example of one of my MS63's, and yours seems to be much cleaner.
Thanks for all the responses! I think I got a nice bargain on this one:whistle: but either way, I do think it's a nice coin. T$, thanks for sharing your coin with us. Dave
No problem, and by the sounds of it, seems like you got a good deal? MS64, high end 64, for me! That is a really nice one, I have a MS64 coming in, I recently purchased one, so when I get the pics, I'll compare yours to mine
I paid what a MS 60 would go for at FMV, so I know I got a good deal. I will look forward to seeing your new coin(s). Dave
Due to the wear on Miss Liberty's hair above the ear and the light wear of rub on the Eagle's breast feathers, I would say AU-58 to possibly MS-60 at best! Frank
Exactly what I thought at first, but I had to think, and pull out my morgans... There is no wear over the ear on my morgans, and doesn't seem to be any on his coin either, it can just be a weak strike, not all the morgans will have all the hairlines struck nicely and evenly. I don't think that there is any actual wear on this coin
I thought the same thing as the ear is quite obvious , but the way the tpgs market grade plenty of high AU coins as MS . rzage:thumb:
That is a very nice looking coin. You may want to set your White Balance on your camera as the color seems off. This could be the lights although the Reverse looks normal in the first photo. Looks to me I need a better photo of the Obverse showing better definition of the luster if any over the ear and cap. With the photo it could be a cleaned MS64 just not enough detail in the photo to make the call.
Thanks for all those responses. I guess the Red Book is right when it states that 5 people evaluating may give you 5 different grades for the same coin. Since the variance is so great I will try to post better pictures this evening after I adjust the light-balance on my camera. I had thought this would be a "slider" between a 64 and 65, but no less than a 63.
With the pictures provided, I still think this is a mint state coin. It is a very clean example, and the suspicion that it has been cleaned might be because of your pics with the white balance off, which normally means the picture taker is hiding something (NOT SAYING YOU ARE, but this is what sellers do) Better pictures will always help, as we cannot see the coin in hand
