I agree with you . . . but that's why I asked "for display purposes" -- I'm guessing there aren't a gazillion variations of Dansco type set pages, or, more specifically, aren't Dansco pages that fit exactly what _I_ (or _you_ or whoever) would define as a type set
Classic Head $2.5 Gold This coin is the most beat up of any other coin in my type set. However, it is also the rarest, being an 1839-O. Even though its damaged, I kept it because of the nice crusty toning and the scarcity of the issue. The reverse is much nicer than the obverse.
The Dansco album (or any album like that) wouldn't do me any good. I buy all my coins for my type set slabbed and keep them that way. Then I use Eagle Certified Coin albums "for display purposes". They're a bit bulky and clunky, but I don't know of any better system.
Nice coin. I've noticed the same thing with regard to obverse vs. reverse conditions. If one side looks better than the other it's almost always the reverse that's better. I've only got one theory so far as to why this seems to be the case. The reverse is generally "busier" than the obverse so marks tend to get lost in the design more easily.
Yeah, another thing I've noticed with coins in the XF/AU range is that the reverse usually has significantly more luster. Thanks! Yeah, actually gold is the focus of my set and I started with gold purchases long before I attempted the 7070. It kind of lead me into getting interested in the rest of the types. I've invested far more in the gold than the rest of the set put together, and they would be the last coins I sell too.
Yeah, well you've noticed that I have removed the "modern" page with bicentennial/clad dollars etc. I feel somewhat the same way Kanga does. I don't have any desire to add state quarters and the new lincolns, and the only reason I have some of the other moderns is because of the empty "clad" space.
Bit off topic, johnny, but I see you're from N Edwards. Do you happen to know if there are any coin shops in Barstow? I'm there every other day for work and get bored crazy sitting in my hotel room, but I've never seen one in town. Figured you might know as you live closer than I do. Guy~
Sorry, I don't. I hardly ever go that way unless I'm headed to Vegas. There is a nice coin shop in Lancaster called "PNG" I think. Really friendly and knowlegable. I used to sell on there bid board, and I purchased both of my double eagles there. I'm a bit embarassed to say it, but most of my coin purchases have been on ebay. Of course, most of the coins of value were certified.
I want to thank you all again for your kind comments! This album has been about 90% of my collecting effort over the past year, as far as finances, research, learning and browsing, as well as selling/upgrading. It has been one heck of an addiction, and a lot of fun. I recommend it to everyone! This forum is a great sanity check, and lots of you have contributed to my purchasing choices.:thumb::thumb::thumb:
You know, you have inspired me to do this type set thing as well.... But, I'm looking to keep mine in the slabs! LOL And I want some of the coins to be in proof, like the indian head penny, and the liberty nickel
you know, here's something about those holes the OP says he has left to fill. When he fills them he will know that he has done something that not just anybody can do. That he has actually accomplished something for the advanced collector and that he has indeed journeyed far along a path of knowledge in order to assemble this set. It is also then that he will realize that it was never about the destination, but about the journey. And then he likely will start another.
