I think it got a bump from the toning and the fact that it is a CC Morgan. I would be interested to know what the luster on the coin looks like. That would be my deciding factor on the grade. The surfaces are definitely not gem, but if both the eye appeal and luster are outstanding, I would have no problem with the coin being market graded to gem.

The coin got 65, because it was a CC and it had some toning.
I think NGC, gives toned coins a pass sometimes, and lets more things slide, and they give them a little bump, and all TPG do this occasionally, seeing a key or semi key date coin, they'll give it a little bump
The reverse of the coin is fairly clean, and it looks great. The obverse has some chatter, but with the toning some of it might not be as noticeable, because your eyes would be drawn to the tone, instead of some scratches you see.
It looks to have about the same amount of chatter, as a 63 or 64, but with the reverse, the toning, and the CC factored in, it makes it a 65 to NGC, and IMO I don't have a problem with this grading at a 65

IMO it should be a 64, but I agree it probably got a grade bump because it's a CC, plus the toning.

I am not sure, but sometimes things look worse in pictures than with the coin in hand. And from those pictures it might very well have received a bump.

My guess after reviewing both Obverse photos the lighting and the toning make this coin very hard to photo. The large photo of the Obverse by itself would make me thing this coin would have a hard time making MS63. Although 3 people at NGC seen this different. While the second photo leaves me with a total different opinion. If I were bidding on this coin I would make sure the seller has a good guarantee with a return policy. My faith in this coin could only be acquired when this coin is in hand.

Pictures can lie, it's all about an eye-appeal grade it seems though.

I agree with Lehigh. Definitley got the bump on eye appeal. Looks like a 64 at best. Pretty coin

Market graded 65*, IMO. Nice coin and probably worth 65+ money with that toning. Technically it has no claim to the 65 grade. But who's right?

I know that the grade got bumped for being a CC and the toning. I just don't agree with it. I wish they wouldn't do that. Somebody would already pay a hefty premium for the star rating. Now move it from a 63 to a 65 and somebody gets to pay double for the same coin. I agree, the reverse is excellent, but I know I've got MS-64s that are way cleaner than this.

I can agree on that one, I'd rather buy a few gold pieces to help my $2.5 set... And I personally don't like the toning on this morgan

It is hard to say without seeing it in hand as photos tend to exaggerate the flaws.

That said, I have seen a lot of toners in NGC slabs that seem to be over graded.

Does that matter? Probably not, there is a market for toners and it probably would have gone for strong 65/66 money with or without the grade.

Personally I think there is to much chatter on the cheek and chin for my taste, no amount of toning can hide that.

This is true, no matter what others say, in the market, toned coins are sometimes OVERGRADED by NGC, IMO if they want to bump it a few grades for the toning, they should give it the star, instead of going out and changing a 63 to a 65!
