Hmm, the US coin would have to be authorized by Congress, and I don't think there are any plans to do so. When the Dutch mint issued the Australië Vijfje in 2006, Australia also issued a coin, and a two-coin set http://www.prospectstampsandcoins.com.au/web/royal_aust_mint/2006_coins/duyfk_sil_pck1.jpg . But the closest thing to a "US coin" about Manhattan and the Netherlands would probably be this: http://www.ny400.org/pressdetail.php?id=85

Not a coin, of course, but it looks nice. :)

Hello again and thanks for the warm welcome.

Well I wanted to go to Open Mint Day it looked like fun. But i found out about it the day afther it was held. (i'm new at coins)

But thanks for the rest of the numbers info. I have been looking for that.

I cald the *Amsterdamse Munten Kantoor*(amsterdam mint office) to ask a bit more abouth these coins.

Got some nice info from the gentleman on the phone.
Well the netherlands japan coin wil be the second and last coin for 2009.
But its stil not sure if there are plans for a 3 coin in this serie in 2010.
A part from that there stil no date as to when the nederland - japan coin will be avalible. At the moment its set on late august/early september.

Overal its not shoking information or anything like that. But I stil think it nice to now there might be more coins from this serie.

As for the date. I don't now maby there waiting for every one to get back from there summer break? :)

Currently the Nederland-Japan coin is scheduled for 24 August. See the Royal Dutch Mint's website: http://nl.knm.nl/sanashop_v2/knm/pages/detail.asp?content=11720000000955_2_11650000000012

The Amsterdams MuntKantoor is a dealer, not the actual mint. Guess that is why they are a little careful when you ask them about the "availability" date. But I suppose that, once the coins are issued, the AMK will have them right away.

As for the Dag van de Munt, you'll have another chance to go ... in about a year. :) It is quite interesting especially if you have not been to the mint in Utrecht before, because you can see designers work on those big plaster models, watch actual coins being made, and so on.

If you plan to buy any of the special sets (Dag van de Munt Set, Themaset, Muntrolpakket ...), get up early and be there early; op is op. Otherwise, coming around noon or in the early afternoon is fine and helps avoiding the lines.

Now if your primary interest is checking out the dealers booths and possibly buying coins from one of the dealers, the Dag van de Munt is a great occasion. But there are others, such as the Muntmanifestatie in Assen (19 Sep 2009) or the Holland Coin Fair in Den Haag (12-13 Feb 2010).

As for what coins are issued, I guess that the mint will always be interested in making new pieces, but the government may have other ideas. ;) Last year for example it first looked as if no collector coins would be issued at all. Finally the government authorized at least one issue - the Architectuur Vijfe - and that sure was a great design too.

    Enjoy your new hobby! :thumb:

Actually quite a few dealers use such names; in the US for example you have "American Mint" or "Royal Scandinavian Mint"; in Germany (where I am) there is "Deutsche Münze", and so on. :) Then again, if that Muntkantoor has attractive (or at least "normal") prices and good/friendly customer service, why not buy there? The website of the Muntmanifestatie in Assen is here: http://www.muntmanifestatie.nl/ned/indexned.htm Also, you may already know about this Dutch language forum http://www.muntenforum.be/ (covers BE, NL and neighbors). Here is a recent topic http://www.muntstukken.be/forum/index.php/topic,25997.0.html about the "relevance" of the Holland Coin Fair and the Muntmanifestatie ...

Yahoo, my 2 Manhattan coins arrived today. They are beautiful! I love all all the detail on the coins. I looked through my stereo microscope, and you can see all the buildings on the coin. Pretty amazing. Thanks Christian for bringing this coin to my attention!

De nada. :) Oh, and in the May issue of De Muntkoerier there was some more info about the maps used for the Manhattan coin: "De plattegronden op de hightech munt zijn door muntontwerper Ronald van Tienhoven gebaseerd op satellietbeelden van Google Earth en op historische kaarten uit de 17e eeuw van The Wildlife Conservation Society." Here is a video, also in Dutch, about the piece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iklhCwlUh-U

The comment at the end ("het Manhattan Vijfe is een wettig betaalmiddel") may be a little misleading; contrary to the circulation coins and the commemorative €2 coins which can be used normally (ie. anywhere within the euro area), these collector pieces cannot be used outside the issuing member state. But it does provide some interesting background info about the coin and its design.

Us Mint came out with a State Quarters/Euro thingy a couple of years ago. Poorly received from what I understand....

Judging from what I know about American coin collecting habits, that is not exactly surprising. ;) But this coin is about "NY 400" and features Manhattan, so it may have made some sense to issue a US coin with the same theme, similarly to the Dutch-Australian couple ...

Not if you have been following this very topic. :) I was referring to this post:

In 2006 the Dutch mint issued a €5 silver coin commemorating the "discovery" Australia. And Australia (Perth Mint) also issued a piece on that occasion.

ow...no wonder. *I think i get it. but the sad part is i think i don't get it.

so in short there was a mint like this back in 2006. and they made a matching one in australia as well.

    Its time to google:)
