Hey there, welcome to the forum

    1) I'd Suggest to NEVER Clean Your Coins
    2) I'd suggest buying a guide to untied states coin 63rd edition, 2010, or we call it "The Redbook"
    3) Find out more about grading coins, and take the nicest ones out, and consider having them grading if they are really high grade
    4) Having the redbook will help a lot, you will learn which coins are worth the most, out of the series
    5) Don't just use the redbook for coins value, I suggest also using www.numismedia.com, and their guides, and also ebay's completed listings

Good luck with your sack of goodies :)

Don't clean them. Go to your library and get a copy of the "Red book", which will give you rough (very rough) values. It will also tell you where to look for mintmarks on the various coins. With this information, you can at least tell which coins are common, and which are rare.

I suppose you could do this with online resources as well. Just find a coin price list. The prices likely won't be accurate, but you should be able to get a relative sense of rarity.

Keep all of the nice ones. If you needed cash, you could sell the less nice ones in bulk on ebay, but get the book and check dates first. 1916-D merc is about a grand in low grade. Learn, learn, learn, before you act. We are here to help!

    here is a hint:
    Buy a book.

Try: The Guide Book of US Coins, by RS Yeoman.

    Then: read it.

how do you store the dimes. like i said 55 pound worth. they are just in a old money sack. i have 2000 rolls of a lot of diffrent coins pennys dimes nickles dollars quaters. Also i have 245 troy once bars of silver. and he gave me 9 Gold South African Krugerrands. im looking into a safe. do you put them in plastic bags. just leave them in the paper wrappers.

Get the nicest one graded(If really high grade), or the key dates graded
I store a lot of my raw coins in 2x2 flips...
You can go to www.wizardcoinsupply.com and that has all sorts of different options for you
My thing is, if this is, if you are short on cash, I'd brake it off into smaller lots and sell on ebay, for something you wanted in the numismatic world... :)
I really don't know how to store 55 pounds of silver, but one thing is for sure, everytime you pick up that sack, those coins get scratched, search through them, and find the key dates! Take those, and determine the grades, and we are here to help.
The choice is yours, whatever you chose to do, you'll do the right thing though

Alright, now that, that is out of the way, are you collector? Would you like to maybe buy a dansco album, and try to complete a set, you said you had over 200 barber dimes, why not get a dansco album, and maybe fill some holes, same with the Mercuries and roosies, they would make a cool set, and you could always sell some duplicates, to get the key or semi keys in the series

You can buy them off ebay, the link I gave earlier for wizard coin supply, and there is also www.coinsupplystore.com
Any one of those sites would be fine ;)

Personally I would not keep them in plastic. It sounds like you want to keep them, wise idea, so I would look into a gun safe. you can store them out of the way and if you get a good fire resistant safe you can keep your inportant documents as well.

    Good luck.

why not clean them. some look like they have rust on them. some are black some are very shinny like new.

Clean them if you like. You can make them very, very, very shiny. But the surfaces will be all scratched up and no real collector will want them.
