I dunno. As far as I'm concerned, there are four kinds of cars - red, blue, silver and colors I don't like.

Car dealers must love me. I suspect the same for this lovely set of state quarters. When I first saw the pictures, I immediately thought this would be a perfect display in one of those 24 hour rest stops that are littered along the Interstate highways.

    I don't know why I thought that.

CamaroDMD, If I decide to grow corn in my back yard and it costs me $5 per ear to raise to maturity and I decide to sell it, my only way of making a profit is to sell it for more than $5 an ear. Unfortunately, people won't pay $5 an ear when they can buy it at the store 3 ears for a buck, but that's the price I need to generate a profit. So, as you see, that theory doesn't work in practice.

In order to stay in business one must turn a profit, but if nobody buys your product, then you'll never even have cash flow, let alone turn a profit.

That's not the worst thing I've ever seen, but $185.00 to start????? That's just begging to be $29.99 in 5 years...

I understand how business works. I was just giving a reason for why these sets might be priced that high. Clearly, people are buying them...so apparently my theory works in this case.

These things have sold for quite a bit of money in the past. Look, I was just giving an example of a reason why it might be so expensive. There is nothing wrong with my argument. People pay crazy prices for things all the time.

sorry. I guess I seem a bit argumentative tonight and I don't mean to. There's a sucker born every minute and I think that any value these have above face will eventually evaporate and the owners who paid a premium for them will be sorry.

But you do have a point as far as the aesthetic value... there's something that I guess is in the eye of the beholder and could possibly even sustain long term value. I don't get it, but others are entitled to feel differently.

I think collecting stuff like this is a hobby...just like anything else can be. I have other hobbies that I'm sure many coin collector's would think is a waste of time and money...but I don't care. I like them all the same. Now, would I want these quarters...no, it's not my thing.
