Yes! It is better to have friends than adversaries. The CU forum could never abide by the CT Code of Honor........it would implode.

I actually joined this coin site because of that thread - since the link was posted there, maybe good publicity for this forum. I lurk more than post on the CU forum and have had mostly positive experiences there, maybe because of my low volume. I do concur that there are quite a few boorish characters there, but if you took their keyboards and monitors away they probably would crawl back into their cold dark lair.

You will notice a cpl differances. I know of no CoinTalker who has owned a 1913 Liberty Nickel, there are more than one over there. I know of no CointTalker who litigates 1933 gold lawsuits, there is one over there.

Hootiness aside, you will find folks here with a VF 1913-S type 2 Buffalo Nickel, you will find folks here that own a 1909-S VDB in VG or XF or MS-65.

What we do here is this.

We welcolme everyone at all experience levels.

I am pretty put off at times ( over there ), and I'm about as close to an average guy as you could find. Snootiness is a turnoff, thats why I like CT.

I don't agree at all with most of this.
I'm one of the first members of CU.
Actually I was a member before it became the board it is now.
It's not right to label all the members there because of the actions of a few. It would also be wrong for someone to label all the members here as such.

Every forum is different and it takes a bit of time to learn just how things work. I got in a bit of trouble here for telling someone that the information they posted was garbage. At CU I could have told the guy to go to L and it would never have been an issue. The CU site runs really fast and if a person is not there very often it can be really crazy understanding everything thats going on. It's not a 1950s site.

With that said. All of the forums have something to offer if you wish to learn.

Thanks Magman, AJ and Charmy and anyone else defending us. This is a great post. I did think some comments were enlightening. I only lurk there, usually when someone puts an interesting link to CU. I have posted maybe 50 times at NGC and similar problems. This forum has all sorts of collectors. I think they clearly judge your right to talk on the level of coins you own ($$- money wise). I don't think you could post a Machine Doubled 1970 S AU coin and not get eaten alive. I think people are a lot more humble here.

    Jim,

Well said and stated! Too often, too many of the longtime Collectors and Experts (some of which I would name as so-called Experts) on these other Forums, forget where and when they got their start in Coin Collecting. They too often turn their backs on the newbies and low budget Collectors and only offer opinions on items that they feel worthy of their' egos! Some even have the attitide, that if your' coin(s) is/are not even remotely worth what their' coin(s) is/are worth, then don't waste their time. No matter how new or how well seasoned a Coin Collector is or how low or high valued a person's coin is, they and their' coins deserve to receive the same respect!

Some very interesting comments and it's time to throw in my Two Cents worth. Hey, what else would I throw in?

I don't belong to CU and don't see myself going there anytime soon. I joined CT first with a bit of a "backround" in coins and was warmly welcomed.
I've joined a few other forums since then. A few I'm fairly active on and they are much smaller.
I don't want to be around a bunch of snobs. Numbers, as forums go, mean nothing to me. I hang out (besides) here on two other forums. One for the "higher level" of discussion I would say. Not a snub on CT and not a bunch of snobs. I actually followed a CT member there that left of his own volition. There are a few of us there and it's not a "bash CT" site although CT does come up.

The other I just joined from a thread in CT. Some pretty smart people there as well but friendly with basic rules. Not bashing other members is one of those rules. Lots of people over there I don't know and I like that.
I think I have things to share in that forum that can educate so I do.

Now back to CT. I used to post a lot more. My average has fallen but I am not just posting here anymore. Do I get bored at times? Yes I do - I'm such a snob.;)

I was so burned out a while back that I had to leave. That "I found an old coin in my grandma's underwear drawer" line from CU actually did hit home with me. Working in a coin shop has a lot to do with that. I hear this stuff all day on the phone and in person so it does get old.
On the other hand, do I just hang up on them or tell them to leave? Nope, I look at the coin and educate them and offer a price we'd pay. That's my job.
Do it all day then come home and do it online and it does get old. I took my break - I needed it. I'll take others but I look at it this way as well. If someone takes the time to inquire about that coin instead of just spending it (and we all know it happens) they deserve an honest answer for just that. Taking the time.

I've had some pretty good experiences here on CT with other members. Took a trip to Phoenix and Long Beach last year with AJ. Met other members there.
Have met a few other members locally.
Had a member show up at work with a bunch of paper money to show me.
I've sent coins to members and sold a few coins and paper as well.
I've got a ton of PMs with questions.
Last weekend I spent quite some time on the phone with another member. Not the first time this has happened.
Hey, what about the Ruben fund Jack started? That was a "family" member in a bad way and people helped. See that on any other forums?

Do I have any "knocks" on CT. Yep and I'll admit I even mentioned one on another forum but not really in a bad way.
It seems to go in cycles but at times threads turn into nothing but a chat room. I can deal with this and if it gets on my nerves I go elsewhere. Insignificant when one looks at it.

Obviously I can't assume all members of sites like CU all behave in the manner as the person that "lashed out" at CT. Guess we're just a bunch of country rubes to some people.
Now I might ask those people if THEY remember what it was like when THEY took an interest in Numismatics.
If it weren't for people like the people here we'd lose a lot of collectors. I may get jaded at times but I always try to remember this.

    CU has it's advantages.

So I'm over here on CT.

Dok, Crack out that stoooopid rusted hunk of struck through junk and spend it. Might get ya half a candy bar.

Or, better yet, put it up on eBay as something really super duper for only $10,000.

Overall, I though the comments made about CT was complimentary. You know you are going to find people everywhere that will argue or disagree with you about anything and everything. Personally I like the clean, helpful and knowledgeable atmosphere which this forum is about.

I was watching a network TV program last night and I could not believe the language and pictures on this show. While most of the younger generation is being brought up on this, I do not think it has to be everywhere.

I lurk at several coin forums, but CT is the only one I have joined. Even though I've been a casual collector for years, I don't know that much about coins. This is the only board out of the ones I lurked that I felt I would not be ridiculed or impatiently pushed aside because of that lack of knowledge. Everyone has been so friendly over here, it really makes us timid folks feel comfortable. :)

I could gossip on and on about the three forums I frequent but they each offer something a little different, so each has their good and bad points.

For me, the best posts are about the coins; especially their history, artistry, rarity etc rather than the business of flipping them, getting in on the hottest latest trends, or using the forum for selling, selling, selling. The latter has turned me off to one of the other forums I used to visit and contribute to alot, so I came here. Generally have found the members here to be actually interested in coins and the pleasure of collecting and learning about them.

I have been a member of the PCGS & NGC forums since 2002. Was a lurker at both for a couple years before that. I still go and read them both on occasion, but no where near like what I used to do. Although I used to post on both nearly every day, I don't anymore, haven't in a couple of years - just don't have the time. And I don't think I've even visited either site since I moved back east.

I will say this, the collective knowledge on both sites is probably unsurpassed - anywhere. But then some of the most knoweldgeable people on the PCGS & NGC forums are also members here on Coin Talk. Even more of them lurk here and never post for whatever reason.

But for them to bad mouth this place ? THAT is a joke

edit - just read the thread on CU. Jack, thanks pal for stepping up, but I really don't need defending. My reputation, such as it is, pretty much speaks for itself. The good and the bad. And there really aren't many on any of the forums who don't know me, except maybe a some of the new folks who haven't been around but a couple years.

Very well said  I agree 100%, I don't have a gaint collection, or one of much money value, but I enjoy what little I have, and since I've been a member here, everyone has been polite, and very helpful in my learning experience. To all the members here at CT........THANK YOU.

I came and lurked for a few years before I started posting. I post mainly on NGC and just don't have the time to post on both.

IMO, a lot of post over here get off of the topic on hand and just post BS like in Chat boards. The quality of the post over here have been going down hill since I joined.
