Disgusting IMO... But these are nicer than what HSN does... BLEH! I would never personally buy these, at anything over face
They don't do much for us coin collectors, since they're numismatically ruined. But of course, we're not the target audience. Some people just like stuff in color, as opposed to black and white.
Yes they do and just as some people (God love em) think Yes they do and just as some people (God love em) think that edited - forum rules
I'm not going to jump on this bandwagon. I like somethings better than others. For instance, I hate black and white movies. First, they are not in color and second the acting is usually, well, over acting. Thank god that someone came up with color. I also like the new currency with the color in it. I can't say that I like the colored state quarters, but they might grow on me.
I agree 100% with this statement. Coin collectors hate these things because the coins are damaged and thus worthless to us. But, there are many people out there who collect other things. To some, these are art because they have been painted. To others, they like them because they are pretty or different. I won't knock someone for wanting a set of these. I certainly don't expect them to ever appreciate in value...but there is nothing wrong if someone found beauty in these to buy a set. It just doesn't suit my personal tastes. We all get frustrated when someone says to us..."why did you pay so much for that coin, it's only worth a dollar" and we have a Peace Dollar. They don't understand our hobby. This is the same thing, we are just on the other side of the fence.
My thoughts are yes there are a lot of folks who like this. They might not be coin collectors though and that price seems steep for anyone.
The price is pretty steep...but who knows how these are made. Are they hand painted? How long does it take the artist to paint one if so? Multiply that by 50 coins in a set and suddenly you have have a lot of time invested. They might be so expensive because it's the only way to generate a profit. I have no real idea...but it's just a thought.
What's worse is I believe these aren't painted; they're stickers. Kind of like the Obama coin... https://www.franklinmintobamacoin.com/flare/next Here are the littleton ones... http://www.littletoncoin.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product5|10001|14552|-1|99416|57436|| -LTB
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I reckon. Some are actually hand painted and cost a lot more. We have a few customers that just want these every year so my boss orders them. Then we have all the people that have bought them or received them as gifts and decide to get rid of them. This generally turns into a lose/lose situation if my boss actually buys them and unfortunately he does. Let's say someone paid only $19.99 for a five coin set of colorized or gold plated. Depending on his mood the boss might offer anywhere from $2-5 for the set. Set will then go in a display case at anywhere from $6.95-9.95. There it will sit for the next millenium. Now, if the boss is out my coworker and I have our buy price. It's generally "we're not interested sorry" or "I'll give you face value for them". This may sound brutal but we don't need them. Sometimes people sell them. I have a nearly complete set of State quarters (1 for each state) that goes in a framed map for hanging on a wall. The boss actually had NO interest even when the guy said he'd take face value just for the coins. Boss asked if I wanted so why not? I paid a quarter for each quarter and nothing for the rest. At some point somebody paid way too much for that. I'll dump it someday in a yard sale I suppose.
