Scanning prblems ,help

That's why I prefaced my comments with 'These statements apply to most scanners.'
There's been several people in here who don't seem to have focus problems when working with slabs.
But most people do (my scanner won't focus coins in slabs).

Anyway I got a new digital SLR and have imaged a couple slabbed coins.
After figuring out how to make it behave I find my main problem is with the lighting.
But it was that way with my older camera.
I just have to continue fiddling until I get it right.

Point well made Kanga. I guess I am not as sharp eyed as I used to be so ig a coin or slab is not in focus I may not notice this as compared to someone with 20/20 vision.
1) 5/8's in deck of cacards
2) same as above but got rid of glare and editted.
3) on a pocket calculator.
4) on a pencil-- best

 

This is a coin in a new NGC holder I scanned @ 2400 DPI. I raised the slab up slightly with a chopstick. Maybe you could get some Chinese take out then take some coin pics?

 

Nice scan... and I like the "rustic" look of that coin!

 

Once I click on manage attachments nothing happens. I made sure that my pop upblocker is turned off,so I know its not that. What else can I do?

My guess is that you have another pop-up blocker turned on. There can be multiple programs with blockers - Yahoo, I.E., firefox, Norton, McAfee, windows just to name a few.

OK I think I got it , but the file is larger than 250 , how do you make it a smaller file .

I do not know what programs you have. You can make it smaller with photoshop, gimp, paint, office picture manager, or someone once posted a progam just to reduce the picture size. There are numerous others I am sure.

 

I tried cropping it down , that didn't work , does it make a difference in JPEG , or jiff .
Man I better go get a Doctorate , well a B.D 1ST i GUESS .

jpeg will probably be the smallest, but you need to shrink it. GIMP, you scale it, paint you resize, photoshop and gimp also have quality control when you save it.

 

Most scanners come with basic software that allows you to resize the image to any size you want... also there are resolution settings; keep them low enough to give a cropped image under 250KB. I think mine was around 150KB. Just fool around with it for awhile... you'll figure it out!

 

Rusty, after I scan an object I send it over to "paint". After diddling with it there I hit "file", "save as", and then choose JPEG. Once the saved file is a JPEG you should have less trouble uploading it. :smile

 

gif or tiff will get you the best size management, while jpeg will get the best size for color management. Bmp will be the best color, but you lose any savings on file size. in MS Paint, just open the image, and under the 'IMAGE' pulldown, 'STRETCH/SKEW'. In the box that pops up, just enter a percentage you want to shrink or enlarge the image. If your current image is 400kb, and you want to shrink it down to under the 250kb limit, enter a number like 75. If you put 75, the resulting image willbe 75% of the original size.

MS Paint is pretty easy and very basic for simple image manipulations. I wouldnt advise using it to enlage and image though. Doing that could very easily pixalate the image, makingit hard to view.

Photoshop and GIMP have many more features for photo manipulation, as would any number of other programs. As the amount of features in an App goes up.. so to does the learnign curve to learn how to manipulate a photo. Paint is very basic, and pretty easy for simple manipulation tasks.

I would also stick to jpeg for currency images. gif is a smaller file size, but i think gif is limited to a certain selection of colors. The format does not use the entire color spectrum that jpeg ro bmp uses. giff blocks colors to save on file size. Take a look at gif clipart files. You should easily see the differance there.

I avoid using gif unless I'm looking for a comic book look.

That format is limited to 256 different colors......max.

If your image demands more than 256 different colors avoid gif's.

Irfanview's newest release also has Paint available built in if you download the newest free plugins.

It's not just for viewing any more...or making slide shows....or playing multimedia....or scanning....or being the swiss army knife of more image file types than anybody in their right mind should consider.

Everybody read this site. I didn't know about sweet spots in scanners and the ability to change the focal point through driver software.:

I'm sure HP would have something like this in there drivers. They're the tops when it comes to these features.
