I have aqcuired this New Zealand 2003 50 cent piece mis-stamped. As well as being stamped off center in both sides, it is missing the broken thread these coins have. I don't know where it was minted but have emailed the Reserve Bank with that question. What I wonder though, is two things. 1) Is this sort of thing common globally? and 2) The abrasion on Queen Elizabeth's face is of an odd texture. Is it possible to be related to the mis-stamping inicdent? I would be greatul for any advice re this coin really.
It appears to be an off-center strike. That's a very common error here in the United States. The abrasions on the Queen's cheek may be just that -- damage that occurred after the strike. I don't know what you mean by a "broken thread".
Sorry, real noobie and not up with the techncal jargon. NZ 50c pces have 5 segments of thread(?)/milling (and of course, five blank segments) round the circumference. This coin has a comletely unmarked circumference.
I guess we'd call it "intermittent reeding" around these parts. Anyway, the edge details you describe are imparted by the collar during the strike. Your coin was struck out of the collar, and thus has a smooth edge.
