    Hi all,

Does anyone know which would likely help in giving me a better chance for an upgrade: submitting to PCGS directly or going thorough a dealer or sending it in to an auction house (i.e. Heritage) to send in for me?

I have a nice PCGS 1912 S Liberty V nickel in MS 64 that I believe can go MS 65 if resubmitted.

Any advice would be great, although I have a feeling that submitting the coin in any of the above ways will probably give me the same result.

    Thanks,
    drddm

Let me ask you this question - do you plan on selling the coin in the near future ? If not - why would you want to resubmit it ?

I do plan on selling it and I feel based on checking out other close up pics of PCGS 1912 S Liberty nickel MS 65 coins on heritage's coin archive that my 64 could probably go 65. Any advice as to how I should resubmit it? Myself, through a dealer or auction house?

    Thanks,

Well, you have to pay the membership fees to submit yourself. Your the best thing would be to re-submit through a dealer. Be sure though that on the submission form that you list that the coin must upgrade or else be left in the same holder. Coins can be downgraded ya know - and with PCGS tightening up their standards recently a downgrade is a very real possibility.

i agree, and with this in mind I would advise putting your money back in your pocket and leaving it as it is now.

Thanks for your advice. BTW, why do you say that PCGS has tightened their grading standards recently? Did you hear something or have any proof that this tightening has happened?

Another question.....If I wanted to show this coin (PCGS 1912 S Nickel MS 64) to a dealer who specializes in Liberty Nickels in order to get his/her opinion on its chance for upgrading to 65 before submitting to PCGS, how would I go about finding one?

    Thanks,
    drddm

Proof ?? I can only wish. No there's no proof - there are only the reports you can read posted by numerous collectors & dealers who submit to them on a regular basis.

The hard part wouldn't be finding the dealer who specializes in these coins. The hard part would be finding one who knows how PCGS grades these coins and is good enough at it to grade them himself.

To be quite honest - I think your best bet would be to post good, quality pics of the coin on a couple of the coin forums and ask for opinions.
