First thing Monday morning I went to my bank (Bank of America) and the teller just opened new boxes of pennies, dimes, and quarters when my turn in line came. Thinking I hit the jackpot, I got a few rolls of each. Glee turned to disappointment when I looked at the first coin in each roll and they were all circulated. During a conversation with the teller she stated that Bank of America does not normally get new coins. I then checked with another large bank in my area, Chevy Chase Bank, and they too had the same story. So, what banks have you found that receive BU coins?
I have had a hard time finding them except presidential dollars which have been carried by local banks. I did get some from a store. I noticed they had some log cabin pennies, so I brought from home some rolls of pennys and asked if I could trade their new ones for my old ones explaining I am a coin collector. They agreed, and I got 8 rolls at face.
It's hit or miss. Sometimes you get them other times you don't. Many banks order coins and they don't know what they are going to be given.
When banks order coins from the Fed they get what the Fed has on hand in this order, circulated coins first, if they are out of circulated coins then they send out the oldest unc coins on hand, then if all the older unc is gone they send out the new stuff. Since the economy has been bad people have been cashing in all their old coin stashes and consequently the Fed banks have been awash in circulated material. All that circulated stuff has to go out before you can get unc rolls. The one exception to that Fed distribution rule is that for a two week period around the issue date for each of the Presidents and quarters the banks can specificly order boxes of the new designs. They CAN NOT do that with the new cent designs.
the only bank that i have got uncirculated rolls from is Bank of The West. i got 2008-D rolls from them. no luck with any other banks.
I have nothing but praise for my bank ~ RABOBANK. The vault teller actually opened 6 boxes of cents last week in front of me looking for a box of type 2. I am sure that is because I am such a nice old gentleman . Social engineering works! Didn't find one, but I did buy a box of type 1. Jim
Well, I've only tried at one bank, and with careful cultivation, the folks there love me. I bring them treats (passed out some Log Cabins a few weeks ago, and later some Guam quarters). I even sold a proof set to the manager at cost -- first proof she had ever seen in her life. They're all on the lookout for me -- anything old or anything 2009. But, unfortunately, it's in a business district (not the kind of bank where little old ladies bring in rolls of old halves to cash in) -- so I've not actually benefited from this at all. (Not one bit actually). They keep asking Brinks for new rolls, but Brinks says they don't do that anymore. So, nothing gained yet on the coin front -- but not for lack of trying -- on both sides. And I've made a few tellers happy.
This may be weird but I have the best luck at Wal-Mart. I also look at the cashiers money to see if I see any new coins.
I went to my coinclub meeting tonight at a restaurant. I paid for dinner with cash and received a LP2 in change. I asked if they have any solid rolls, and they had two and they sold it to me. I then put one of them up for auction at the club meeting and it fetched $2.50. Should I feel guilty?
Actually Wal-Mart IS a good place to look for new rolls. They go through so much change (and are big enough to have some pull) and do tend to prefer to distribute new coins, that they seem to be able to get the new coins sooner.
