While I don't have the elusive and costly 1873 S-1 Double Die Indian cent, I just acquired the 1873 S-2, which is almost as good, to go along with my 1873 Open 3 and 1873 Closed 3 Indian cents. I also have a little story that goes along with the S-2. If any of you have read "my story" on how I got started in coins, you'll recognize this part of that story. (By the way, I also posted this recently on the PCGS forum in response to AJ's "You Suck" string.) When I first started collecting/buying/selling Indian cents, I won an unc raw 1873 Cl. 3 Indian cent off Ebay for $110. It was a beautiful coin, probably MS64 RB. Right after the auction ended, I received an email from another Ebayer offering to buy it for an extra $100. I told him I would have to wait until I had the coin in hand to see it for myself before I would sell it. That email made me suspicious, so I decided to take a good close look at the coin when I got it to see why this guy wanted it so badly. So as soon as the coin arrived, I pulled out my Flynn variety book and compared this coin to all the 1873 varieties, and, yes, I'm sure you guessed it, it was the double die variety - unfortunately not the type 1, but almost as good - it was the second variety with most of the letters in Liberty strongly doubled. Of course I hooted and yelped and was so excited that my family wondered what was going on. I can sincerely say that that was the moment my husband and kids finally understood the true value of a penny! Any way, I ended up taking this coin to the Long Beach show and selling it raw for $2,000. Though this happened a while ago, that is my best "you suck" story. p.s. Rick Snow currently had a very similar coin on his website, and I swear it is the exact same coin I sold all those years ago - so of course I had to buy it for my own set! The photo of the S-2 is this coin. (If you click on the photos, they will enlarge and you can see the doubling in Liberty on the S-2.)
Thanks RLM. I don't really care about the "competition" that goes with the registry sets, you know, getting a better coin just to get another point so you can get higher on the list, etc., - it's just not my thing. And besides many of my coins are raw. Many of the dates that I haven't displayed are raw, and I don't have photos of those yet.
Charmy I read this thread and the CU forum thread. I did not realize the score you pulled off. It at the time would have surely garnered the coveted " you Suck" . Wow, an Ebay find into 2K, only to buy it back later? From Rick Snow ??? LOL, You must have REALLY loved that coin. The coins you post and your knowledge really help this forum, and helps to obscure the " girl" coin dealer thingy. We all benefit here, and those of us so fortunate to actually meet you and call you a friend, we'll thats just an added bonus. I am really glad you came over here. See ya in 10 days darlinKiss
Wow, Jack, I can't tell you how much you warm my heart - you are such a sweetie, and it is I who benefit greatly from this forum and all the new friends I've made through it and through you! I mentioned before how hard it is for women in this business, but you all make the male/female thing non-existent! I'm looking forward to Ontario - and I'm sure we'll be able to find a decent cardroom somewhere near (I'll look into it)! p.s. I just received the bourse app and floor plan for the St. Louis show that was discussed in another string, so I'll email that to you too.
