Hi, I just opened today's mail. In it was a package from an ebay seller for an auction I won containing 31 War Nickels. I don't usually collect war nickels, but I was browsing on ebay and put in a bid I thought was good for the lot and I won them. I paid promptly, and the seller shipped promptly. The seller sent them to me in a bubble envelope, which was great, except for the fact that they were all Scotch-taped along the obverses and reverses of the coins, in 3 strips, kind of like a beaded curtain, if you can picture it. After removing them, they all look fine, but do have a gummy feel to them. (like if you stack them, they sort of stick together.) These are circulated coins, nothing fancy, but still, it really makes me mad. Am I being overly sensitive? I have not yet left feed back for the seller, and she has not yet left feed back for me. I am trying to protect my so far perfect feed back rating, so I don't want to leave a negative unless I have to. I am also afraid to email and complain to this seller because a few years ago I had a different ebay account and I left a postive feedback for somebody, and then sent them an email that I wasn't happy that their listing said they would use insured priority mail shipping for a coin, and then getting it in an uninsured envelope with a first class stamp. They then left a negative feedback for me that I was an anal and abusive customer, and that other sellers should cancel my bids. Suggestions?
Ebay isnt a good place to complain if your trying to keep 100%;. I have 100% too and have had for a few years now. I had to let one jerk off who sent me a ''very fine'' Warren Vampirella that ended up being less than even a ''good'' reading copy. The Spine was busted open almostall the way, corners were trashed. He had taken the picture from just such an angle as to not show the damage. I had gotten literally hundreds of magazines and comics off ebay that were as described, so I assumed this ass was being honest too. anyway, I wrote him a nasty letter after we exchanged feedback (positive) Heres what Id do. Give them good, wait for them to give you good, then go back in and leave a followup note that tells what they did.....then write them an email about it. You both end up with your feedback, but anyone reading thru the FB as I always do will be alerted to the issue.
Well, Ebay is something of a challenge.... but I've had experiences with people where if you're up front with them in an email and honest about the situation, they will be cool too. I would try sending an email BEFORE giving feedback explaining that perhaps she wasn't aware that the tape ruins the finish on the coins, and leaves them all gummed up. It's possible that she had no idea. Be polite and courteous, and wait for a reply. See if you can get a refund, etc. However, I myself am not as worried about a perfect 100% FB rating, so this approach might be a bit of a risk if she really is a pompous prick who did that on purpose. Anyway, that's my two cents worth! ~AJ
I would email and explain to them that COINS MUST NEVER be taped!!! Cover them with something and then tape the outside! Be kind and they will probably acknowledge your efforts if they intend to sell more coins of any kind.
Give them the bad feedback...don't worry about yours...your other feed back will speak for itself--I too have a bad feedback but the guy just wouldn't send me the address to send the money...(I waited 6 months to leave anything) he emailed and said that the book got wet and he would send me another one just pick one from a list...I did and he never wrote back...guess it got wet too! Speedy You will have to put the coins in AceTone to get off the tape....completely
Thank you all for you input. I have decided to hold off on feed back and send her an e-mail very politely stating my displeasure with the coins being taped up they way they were. I have come to the conclusion that it is only fair to give her the chance to remedy (offer for refund? apology and promise to not do that again?) the situation before leaving negative feedback. I will post back here if and when I get a reply. Thanks again!
I just sent this to the seller through ebay's system. I will post any response I get. ---------------------------------------------- Hi! I would like to thank you for shipping the 31 war nickels so quickly. It is always nice when sellers are prompt with delivery. I got them today in the mail. I would like to mention that putting tape or any other such substance directly onto coins is never a good idea. Any chemical that one causes to come in contact with a coin will affect its surface, usually in a negative way. I have removed the coins from the tape, and there is now a gummy film on all 31 of the nickels. I would have preferred them just being placed loose into the bubble mailer envelope. Aside from that, I want to thank you for your prompt shipping of the nickels. I thank you in advance for your response to this e-mail, and may God bless you and keep you. Doug. ----------------------------------------------
Sounds more like inexperience than malice; she probably just doesn't really know what she's doing. You probably did the right thing; she won't do it again most likely.
That was a very good letter regardless of the outcome. You must have taken a management course somewhere in your life. Its the best way to criticize someone, sandwich two positives around a negative. Nicely done.
doug, you did the right thing. now if she doesnt email you back with an explaination, leave all teh negative feedback you want. you did nothing wrong, you paid on time. if she leaves a neg, YOU can write something back about how she messed up your item!
I'm only curious, but can I ask how much you paid for them off Ebay? If it isn't much, even if she doesn't offer a refund, but still comes to realize what she had done incorrectly, perhaps you can afford to eat your losses and still maintain the perfect feedback.... Just a thought! ~AJ
I just received the following communication from the war nickel seller: ---------------------- Thank you for the information on the tape. We did not know this.If you buy any more coins off us,we will not charge you any shipping on your next purchase.Thax-********(ebay id removed) ---------------------- I believe them, and am satisfied. I left a positive feed back for them and did not mention the tape, as I really think they didn't know and hopefully they won't do it anymore. To answer ajm229, I paid $15.00 total, (including shipping).
Bacchus that was a GOOD one. I, thanks to my wife, now send all envelopes I receive with sales pitches that require no postage, back to the sender EMPTY! Gives me the self satisfaction knowing they spent their money on postage to get nothing back. I don't ask for their junk mail so sending part of it back, at their expense, is really quite rewarding and in my own little way I am helping our cash strapped postal service? And I can just imagine that poor individual opening empty envelopes all day if everyone would just do the same!
Why just send part of it back? Stuff the whole letter/sales pitch whatever into the postage paid envelope and mail it back to them. Let them dispose of their own trash, why should you do it for them?
That's probably a good idea, for two reasons: 1) it might push their prepaid envelope cost up, and 2) if they know who is sending back envelopes they might take you off their mailing list.
