CamaroDMD the clad coins may have intrinsic value over a U.S. paper dollar the problem is that the rest of the world does not trade in those metals, Pre 1964 coins have silver and can be traded but clad coins do not convert easily into other currencies for intrinsic metal content but rather U.S. face value.

I would have to disagree about the availability of gold. In 2009 january national geographic magazin intitled "gold" they state:

"in all of history, only 161,000 tones of gold have been mined, barly enough to fill two olympic-size swimming pools. More than half og that has been extracted in the past 50 years. Now the world's richest deposits are fast being depleted, and new discoveries are rae. Gone are the hundredmile=long gold reefs in south africa or cherry-size nuggets in california. most of the goldleft in mine exists as traces buried in remote and fragile corners of the globe. It's an invitation to destruction..."

Weryon that was an interesting story but they were coming at it from the perspective of new discoveries not from the business side where mines open and close due to current price of gold. Also who would ever have imagined the gold boom in California in the 1800's. It is an easy enough story to swallow as most people do not wonder about what is underground.

Here is a good example when silver hit 50 dollars an ounce it was unbelievable how much of it was being held above ground by ordinary citizens. It was really crazy but it happened. So what I am saying is it is all speculation as the saying goes a mine owner is nothing more than a liar who owns a hole.
