My avatar is a 1793 w/rim inscription how much is it worth? I had a person on facebook e-mail me a say he had had his grade by NGC VF-20 and it sold for $1250.00 I know mine is a better grade just look a photo's. it never been cleaned,my grandmother gave to me back in the 1960's.I am thinking about having it graded if was worth the money my facebook buddy said. where are some price guides for graded coin/token???of this type???
I found this online, http://www.coinsandstamps.com/forei.../05 Kent/british_condor_tokens__kent_to_l.htm
It is a Halfpenny Token 1/2d, a rather nice example as well sorry I can not give you any help on the value though. there a few in the link going from $25 to $45 but they are no were near as nice as yours :high5:
jello - did you determine the edge inscription? As you may remember, I told you there were several varieties of these and different rarity associated. Beyond condition, determining the rarity is critical to determining the value. However, none of which are going to be worth that kind of coin your friend referenced.
Here the rim lettering. its not to easy to read but here it is I have only found one other will this lettering and was list price raw $275.00.about the same grade.
Ah Ha! jello - from your pictures then, the edge inscription should read "PAYABLE AT BIRMINGHAM LONDON OR BRISTOL". If that is the case, then it is the variety 135a according to the Dalton and Hamer reference book. This is a common variety of 9 different possibilities. The 135 series is considered a general trade token and there were about 712,000 made according to Arthur Waters text "Notes on Eighteenth Century Tokens". It should not be given a sales premium for this particular variety. The edge inscription is critical to determining the variety and this, along with condition, is crucial to determine value. It's a nice piece and I hope you hold on to it!
Here is a link to a prominent Conder dealer's sold archive that lists several of these different varieties (but not yours). You can get an idea for what he sold them for: http://www.vcoins.com/world/cheapsi...riesAndProducts.asp?idcategory=100&curPage=51
Thanks for that update Catbert I learnd something new again today so that makes me happy and thanks also to Jello for taking the time to photograph the rim
Thanks you Catbert!!! It won't be for sale while I am still a live!!! I just going to have it grade so when I pass on. my son will know what it is
Some advice regarding slabbing.......I believe that NGC is the only company that will slab these (not PCGS). You also will want to instruct them to note the variety. According to many people I've spoken to, they often mis-identify the variety. Many Conder dealers do not want to buy their Conders slabbed because they want to verify the variety themselves (thus will crack them out before committing to buy the token from the seller). They also tend to be anti-slab in general, much like many early U.S. copper collectors. Whether the edge is readily identified in the new NGC prong holder is something I don't know. Lastly, I would caution you on spending the money to have it slabbed. The cost will likely exceed the value of the piece.
I know the cost may be more than it worth! If slab my son won't sell it.he know when wife & I worm food he has to pass my family's collection down and if it is grade he will know that it is a part of the family's Item.
