PCGS gave this Matte Proof a 65 RB many years ago.
Would you have passed on it because of the spot?
Do you feel it belongs in a 65 holder?
You can't hurt my feelings so post away.
I'll give my opinion a little later.

Bother me ? Yes. The eye is drawn to it like a magnet.

Would I have passed on buying the coin because of it ? Maybe, tough question to answer because I never wanted one of these and the thing that largely decides whether a person will buy or pass is their desire to own the coin. I will say that I have passed on buying other coins for similar things.

Does it belong in the holder ? All day long ! Gorgeous coin !! :thumb:

Passed because of the spot - NO, although it definitely enters into the equation as a negative. There are lots of other things (positive) in that equation not the least of which is the color.

Belong in a 65 holder - Without seeing the reverse, it is a little hard to really answer that. If you are asking does a spot like that prohibit a grade higher than 64. Again, it is balance with the rest of the coin, but that spot would not freeze the grade at 64 to me.

Hurt your feeling? Why? That is a gorgeous coin I would be proud to own.

The picture is so big the eye is drawn to the one spot. I would like to see the coin in hand to make a determination, but I think it might not bother me in person. And as mentioned that is a very nice coin.

For me the 1st thing I seen was the wonderful coloration of it  Dont ask ne about grades though LOL the spot woudnt bother me in the slightest, then again I am possibly not as much a puerist as some of the guy's if I like what I see then for me that says it all.
Stunning coin now please show us the other side LOL

The spot is a killer. It draws the eye and steals some of the beauty of the rest of the coin as the eye keeps coming back to it.

Yeah, sure do. "Eye appeal" is largely about how your eye moves through the coin and the feelings evoked from that. What you need is come carbon spot tonic. I understand it grows hair, too. ;)

Coin is beautiful, every coin has some small flaw...even a MS70 is not 100% perfect...I would have no problem wanting that coin, the carbon spot does not change anything IMO

I like it is a great coin and I would love to have it in my collection. I feel that it totally deserves to be in the holder. That being said, the spot does detract from the eye appeal so it would factor into my decision to buy this coin. I certainly wouldn't overpay for this coin...but if I could get it at a decent price I would certainly grab it.

We are talking about psychology here. If it bothers you now, it will bother you more later as it will remind you that it is there. I do think the large photo magnifies the issue and I bet in hand it isn't as significant.

For me, it would more than likely make me pass on buying it since I am a type collector. If I was a series collector, maybe I'd react differently. In any case, it is a gorgeous coin!

.......yes, the spot would bother me and i would pass. but the question here is did it have the spot when it was graded or did it develop AFTER it was slabbed. if it was the latter, then i think i would send it back for an exchange or cash per the guarantee. i think it would be good to know what it looked like originally when slabbed. if it was slabbed WITH the spot, then i surely don't think it deserved the 65. jmo

I like the coin, it might be very difficult to find a replacement ?

I'd look through Heritage and compare to other 65's.

The spot seems to bother me more and more over the years.
It really makes a persons eyes keep coming back to it.

It's interesting to here all the different opinion. The one that really stands out to me is that no coin is perfect.
I loose site of that way too often and forget the good things.

It's tough to find one of these with nice color and I lost interest in looking.
This is an image I took years ago. It shows a bit more of the toning.
I removed the spot for the fun of it. Wish I had saved it in a larger size.

I don't find the spot to be much of a distraction, it's tiny and on a small coin. It's just when you blow it up to cantaloupe size that it becomes very noticeable. I think the incredible colors more than make up for it.

Doesn't bother me at all. I have 10 complete sets of Lincoln Cents and all in order of grade. Set #1 is all MS and continuing downward after that. Set #10 is really in lousy shape so a coin like yours doesn't bother me at all. I would put that one in set #2. I have no slabbed coins so if that one was in a slab, I'd break it out.

You would crack a 65 matte proof?
Have you looked at the price of these lately?
I'm sure I would just sell it before cracking it.

Not one single bit! I don't mind carbon spots when they're small....it shows originality. So many coins have been doctored to remove carbon spots. When I see them, I pretty much know the coin is unadultered. Plus, we're talking about a matte proof with a mintage of 1150, a very, very rare coin.

At 1000 pixels , a carbon spot looks like a crater. This would not concern me and not affect the grade, it is after all a 65........

I call this a gorgeous coin and a very desirable gem proof Lincoln
