I'm a new collector putting together a set of Jeffersons. I'm interested in uncirculated but not worried about full steps or high 65+ grades or anything like that. Most coins in this series in 60-63 seem to sell for under a dollar or two. So far I've gotten about twenty coins, including some proofs, from the local coin shop. While he carries most mintmarks and dates for this set, he doesn't necessarily have more than one in stock of any particular mm/date. My question is for those of you who also collect these low-cost coins: How do you get yours? If I don't like his particular 83 P (for example), I'd feel stupid asking if he could get some others. It's a $0.35 coin - hardly worth his time. I check ebay and most common Jeffs I see for bid are in large lots, not individual unless they're slabbed (i.e. out of my price range right now). Are there online coin sellers that you have had good experiences with who have a nice selection of inexpensive coins like these? It seems like a silly question but I'm curious. Thanks for suggestions, Ryan
I've had mixed results buying raw coins online, so I hesitate to suggest a dealer I haven't actually tried. But several people on this forum have mentioned Coast Coins as a reliable supplier with honestly graded material. I've looked at their website, like what I see, and they are on my "short list" of dealers to try next. I usually begin with a small purchase and if I like the material, I go back for more. It would be great, however, to hear comments from people who have actually ordered from them.
If your dealer is anything like mine, chances are the '83P he's got in the display case isn't the only one he has. My dealer, for example, has numerous extras that he stores in tubes and boxes in his safe in the back. He also has albums (like Dansco) that he stores extras in. Therefore, I would suggest that you ask him to see if he has any other "83P's" in stock before looking elsewhere. This way you still get the coin for $0.35, and you don't pay s&h! If he doesn't have it right in stock, you can certainly ask him/her to keep an eye out for it for you, and move on to the next coin in the series until you find a suitable one. The key is all in establishing a good repore with the dealer. If he/she recognizes you from past purchases, then they're more likely to be able to effectively help you. You might even get a bit of a discount in mass purchases. Hope this helps! ~AJ
I agree with AJ. If you have found a dealer that will take the time to help you with so-called small purchases at reasonable prices, then you have found a good one. Not all dealers are like that. I have never understood why some dealers won`t take the time to cultivate a new collector making smaller purchases. It only makes sense that a new collector will go one to bigger and better things down the road. Don`t be soured on the hobby if you run into a dealer or three that doesn`t seem to want to be bothered with you. Find one that will. They are out there. Good luck in you collecting endeavors!
I ordered a roll of silver eagles from coastcoin. Should be coming in the mail today. Not a bad price. The day I locked in, it was $174 + shipping($4). I did have to ask to insure them though. I dont trust anyone when money is being shipped. Will check back in about them.
I too would also suggest asking your dealer as most dealers usually keep books of 2X2's of their inventory. However if it is one of those coins you want now I would suggest the following dealers: Alaska Coin Exchange Chuck D'Ambra Coins Both of these dealers grade honestly and also have very reasonable shipping. I would highly recommend either. Jim
