It's quite simple, prop up one edge and scan away. If you look at my pics you will see something at the upper edge. That's simply another Air-Tite with the edge of the holder with the coin in it sitting on top of it. Anything a quarter inch thick will work.

It's the slight change in the angle of the coin to the scanning plane that allows the scanner to capture color & luster. Other than that you do nothing, you change no settings on the scanner whatsoever.

Now to get the detail I scan at 600dpi and save the image as a .tif file. Then I crop the image, size it appropriately, and then and only then save it as a .jpg file. Nuttin to it.

That's it?! Just doing that captures the luster of the coin?

Huh! I gotta try that when I get home tonight.

Thanks for sharing the "secret" to good scanning!

That's it, and yes it is just that simple. Good solutions usually are though. I have shared many times in the past right here on Coin Talk and several other forums as well. It's no big secret, people just don't read all the posts so they miss things. And they forget things

I did everything you said but I still can't get lustre. I was able to pick up the colour better than before but this half dollar has so much lustre and I still can't get any of it to show. Also if I elivate the coin anymore than 1mm it becomes fuzzy. You can see a little fuzz in the top half of the coin even at 1mm. Is there a way to get around it.

By that she means she is off to get me to do it. ;) LOL
Well here are the results of it. I propped one end up with a chopstick and set something to 2400, set the sharpness to medium then let it do its thing. I ended up with a scan 166 mb big, so I cropped it down to the slab which was 27 mb, then I cropped it down to the coin which was 3.9 mb.

So how do you guys think I did?

Nice detail of a lovely coin  quite often I will just prop one end of the coin holder on the lip of the scanner :)

GDJMSP, man I can't remember your handle. Anyhow, I tried putting a scan or two or three in a .tif image. Yes it may be cropped but I'm having problems with resizing them. .tif files are can be large uncompressed files so when you go to resize them no effect takes place. What am I doing wrong? It's the initials ''JG'' that bother me not being clear enough.
Thanks for all your tips(pun intended)about tipping /tilting them to get better details and luster. zeke
    Trying again.

And 1mm aint gonna cut it. You have to tilt a coin and roll it around under a light to see luster and color, right ? Well, for a camera or scanner to see luster & color you have to do the same thing - they don't work any differently than your eyes do. But if your scanner isn't up to the job, then there probably isn't much you can do either. Except get a new one. I use HP scanners, always have. Other brands just don't work like they do.

Just call me Doug like everybody else does ;)

After you crop the orignal scan that was saved in a .tif file - you then have to save the file as .jpg - did you forget that step ?

Also I don't know what software you are using, but there is little easier than re-sizing even if only using Paint. Tell me the exact steps of what you are doing and I can probably tell you how to solve it.

I use an HP All in One F2100. What I am having trouble with is seting the sharpness of the scan. If anything is not set on the scanner bed itself than it is blurry. It may be the program I use is the problem. I am using xsane through the GIMP. I am going to log into Windows in a few minutes and try another program to see if I can change the settings. Thanks Doug!

It may just be my scanner. Even after changing the sharpness I still can't scan anything that is not flat on the bed. Any suggestions?

Thanks Dough. No I didn't forget to resize. I'm just missing something. I'll get it right soon. I was just thinking about BYRD's problem. I wonder if his scanner is level or possibly the tracks for his light are level.

Hey BYRD70, try evenly tilting the back of a playing card, or something 4x4 or 6x6 inches, with a pencil and scanning it. Do it for length, then width. Check to see if the sharpness is worse or better on one side or the other. If so I suggest calling HP Tech. Support and send them your results. I hope everything checks out okay. All I know is that when my scanner wasn't level it made a heck of a grinding noise and scanned erattically.

The scanner is perfectly level. No matter which way I tilt the item I am scanning, anything that is not flat on the bed is fuzzy. It only scans close items. If I were to scan a medal at a high relief the low parts will be clear but the high parts will be fuzzy.

BYRD740 I tried several things and it took me hours but no help to you yet.
Can it be that you're scanning too small in incremintal steps(?) If you set your cropped area larger does it get any better or worse?
Here is what I suggested above and you said it was level:
The last scan is a solution to my 'FG' sharpness problen. I got it Doug!
