This time I agree with every thing you said. I was trying to make a point with the '08 cents that they too weren't available immediatley in '08. No doubt in circulation the '09 (especially the dime and nickel) coins are very difficult to find, and I said earlier in this thread they probably will continue to be. But as far as the cent, quarter, and dollar coin they have been bought in mass so much they will never be in short supply in collector quality. I think the nickel and dime will be obtainable later on from bank rolls, but at what grade? Again I just think in June of '09 it is a little early to say "09 coins are going to be semi keys or better". I would have to say people who feel they are actually rare or going to be rare are those that pay the super high prices they are currently commanding. One coin always comes to mind to me this year when I read a lot of these posts about '09 coinage is an error coin, but it is a coin a lot of people thought was going to be so rare and paid so much. The coin I'm referring to is the "Godless Dollar". I think in the beginning people paid over a thousand dollars for these, worth now I guess fifty to seventy dollars. If you think they are going to be semi key or better then go for it. You may be absolutely right and I may be absolutely wrong. I'm not trying to change your opinion with mine, only stating mine in a discussion.
I'm not having any trouble getting 2009's (Pennies that is) Just because you can't find them, doesn't make them rare Because others have found them, bob found what, like 10 dimes already... And there is just more to come.. And like Mr Coin Lover said, by the time you find them, these coins will look like throw away junk, the condition won't be good, at all
So far, the 2008 pennies, were harder for me to get than 2009 pennies I have yet to see a 09 dime, nickel, or quarter in circulation, but this will still not make em' rare If the whole memorial penny series's KEY DATE, is a penny with hundreds of millions minted... Well, like I said in my original thread, it tells a lot about that series.
OK, I'm sort of new at this, but isn't the definition of "Key" or "Semi-Key" is that they are the lower mintages? It's really not all that difficult or expensive to find a 50 D Jefferson Nickel, but it is considered the "Key" date of the series so far. I agree that people are being silly about the 09 dimes and nickels, but still, wouldn't a lower mintage put them into "Key" status even if they carried a low premium? Seems we are equating "Key" with "Expensive" which does not always necessarily follow. Even if the 09 dime is a key, I do not see it carrying a big premium, because collecting interest in Roosy dimes is pretty low. Lots more people collect Jefferson nickels, and 09 is going to be a tougher to find year...not difficult, just tougher.
Because thy are still tied up in the distibution system behind the huge flood of circulated coins that people started cashing in after the economy went sour. Fed policy requires that orders for coins from banks be filled from circulated stock first before they are filled from Uncirculated stock. The huge amount of circulated coins redeemed is the reason the mintage of the 2009 coins has been reduced so much. In 2008 the economy was better and when people got coins they tossed them into jars when they got home. So coins were being constantly removd from circulation and had to be replaced. This means that coins flowed quickly from the Mint to the Fed to the banks. This year the cins were flowing from the people to the bank to the Fed. Then recenly from the Fed to the banks again, and it has just been recently that they are started flowing from the Mnt to the Fed as the stocks of coins in the Fed have started going back down.
or sell it while the price is high! I'm not sure the price will ever be higher (for dimes and nickels)
That's the best advice!!! If you find them now, understand that you will find more later! Take the money and sit it out... they will be out there later! Let the hysterical pay for common coins because they have to have them first!!! Sit back and watch from a comfortable chair!!! It is going to be entertaining to be sure!
Question is if they will be in any good condition by the time it gets to people. P dimes will be much easier to find but nickels will be very hard to find and it is my thought that when people do find them they will not be in solid rolls but rather mixed in with other coins. On a side note I spoke to one of the editors at Coin World and theyre hoping to put out an article on the upcoming issue or the one after.
next few years. collectors will be remember the year 2009. it is the best year for us to collect them. everything are so few and hard to find. maybe once in a blue moon that we can ever see this happen again.
