A quote from the auction: "I did not send these in for grading yet, I will let my customers reap the rewards of doing that" If you call having your coins sent back to you in rejected body bags a reward, then whoopie for you. Seriously though, that is very pretty. So pretty that it has to be fake. I wish it were natural toning. I am not a toning expert, I am just going by the adage, if it seems to good to be true it probably is. If the shipping wasn't so high I would bid on it even though I believe it is artificial toning just because of how cool it looks. At least it would still be worth melt. I am not paying $15.00 total price for an AE though.
Yeah, I am now more even more convinced it is artificial toning after checking out his other items for sale. I don't think there is anyway a clad Ike is going to tone (naturally) like this one...but correct me if I am wrong. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11981&item=8316920772&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW And is it just me, or did he do this himself at his work bench: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41098&item=8316755995&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW I don't mean to impugn his veracity, but I am having serious doubts about this guy.
Just trying 2 "spark" a conversation...not a buyer. It is pretty though. What would be the pointer, that this is NT? thx
The "Clip" may be real. It may be the planchet was punched at the edge of the clad strip, giving the straight edge. The slightly off-center of the coin opposite of the "clip" gives credence to this theory. Maybe some others that know more about these types of errors can debunk that. You are correct, though, that the apparent AT of his other coins leads one to suspect that he may be altering his coins.
Under the right conditions - you bet they can. Toning is taking place from the moment a coin is struck.
aaack..the coin in the OP sold for nearly $50!! It's pretty, but with questionable toning, it isn't worth anywhere near THAT much!
I am by far probally the most novice coin collector around even though I,ve been collecting for 40 years .but these coins look way outside the limits !! If you notice the toning on this Ike & Peace dollar look almost the same. Makes me go hhhmmm
