http://cgi.ebay.com/USA-10-gold-Mar...=65:13|66:4|39:1|240:1318|301:0|293:1|294:200 I even saw a cert (NGC) ms 70 going for $495. This certainly gives me second thoughts about shelling out $600+ for these coins from the mint.
Well, they are bullion, so it's no surprise. I don't see why people shell out on average 10% over melt for modern gold bullion when they can pick up 100+ year old numismatic gold for nearly right on spot. It's crazy. Guy~
Spouse If i remember right, the first gold spouses sold for around $400.00 directly from the mint. Some reasons i think people buy these coins from the mint; They are 4 9's gold (.9999), you know they are genuine, low mintages(as bullion price increases, these spouse coins are canidates for melting contributing to even lower numbers of existing coins, and i think some are drawn by the historic series and like the coins. I wish that i would have stopped buying all sorts of coins, just bought the spouse coins as they came out. I guess the major reason is i'm more bullish on silver than i am on Gold.
Thanks Danr. This kind of stuff isn't really on my radar screen, but it's the kind of stuff that makes patrolling Coin Talk worthwhile. Never know when it will come in handy!
I think that it is common to find some of the first minted spouse coins to run in this price range. I have noticed this as well. I don't think you will find an 08 spouse in this price range. This is going to be one of those sets whose value will not be determined any time soon. Probably 20 years or more down the road.
Those are in the $600 to $750 range. But 13 out of 26 got a bid (that is when you take all of the 70's out of the mix). Only half get a bid. I strongly discourage anyone from buying the new ones from the mint (though I probably will).
