I have a 1980 Liberty Half Dollar that has been hollowed out to form two pieces, which when pieced together gives the appearance of a normal Liberty Half Dollar.

If this was not odd enough, there is a Mexican coin attached to the backside.

Someone spent alot of time altering this half dollar so that it would appear normal, however it holds a hidden compartment.

    Any ideas?

Hi bigslick, and welcome to the forum
    Lots of them. :D

    >>Click here<< for a fascinating cold war story about the use of such a coin by spies

And, of course, there are always >>magic coins<< made pretty much the same way, with or without a hollow space in which to conceal something.

Or, how about this literary snippet, from a Cliffs' Note summary of Les Miserables by Victor Hugo?

    Value? Numismatically, zero.

It might have some value to a collector of spyware, magic paraphanalia, etc., based on its workmanship, not its status as a coin.

    Big,
Based on the date your description, what you have there is a magician's coin. I've seen a few searching through Half Dollar boxes. If I'm right, the coin is hollowed out as you say and at the bottom of hollowed out piece there is a circular cut pattern. The other peice which you remove from the hollowed out portion has the Mexican coin engraved on the back side of the Half Dollar. The magic trick involves placing the mexican side face up so the coin appears as one, but depicts the Kenndey Half on the back and a Mexican coin on the front. As for value, I've seen them sell for $14.95 at magic stores online. Although, not a fortune, it is a cool piece to find!
