New Presidential Dollars 2006 or 2007?

All this is one big cluster _____. 5 quarters, 5 dollar coins, 4 cent coins (in 2009), etc.

I almost forgot the presidential wives gold coins...BOY, I can't wait for those! Maybe they should come out with First mistresses coins as well! Put them on a $20 gold bullion coin. At least they kept the President "happy".

The mint should concentrate on quality instead of quantity...but then again, we live in a PC society where an obverse of a native-american (with newborn) is better to look at then some modern rendition of Liberty. Oh silly me...Liberty was deemed "too political" by the CCAC. What a shame.

Throw some more mud against the mint walls, something will eventually stick.

Dockwalliper, do you have any newer documentation on this bill on either sides of Congress that is dated newer than May 17th to reflect what you're saying on these updates? I haven't been able to find any documentation on these changes on the government's web sites.

Loved your comments regarding Presidential mistresses.

The number of coins for TJ, Harding, JFK, Bubba, and others, would be sizable.

    Thanks for the humor.

I still think the series would be great, and hope it passes Congress.

The Presidential Dollar coins are the worst idea they have come up with yet. Not to mention they will NEVER circulate. No dollar coin will ever circulate in the US until
they retire the $1 bill, something they are reluctant to do. You will never see these
coins anywhere except the US Mint website, dealers shops and tables, Ebay, and of course on TV. All at inflated prices, for coins minted by the tens or hundreds of millions. JMHO

bzcollector YOU have hit the nail on the head. Nothing more than Congress pandering to themselves and the Mint making a ton of money. The dollar WON'T circulate, not because people won't use them, but because the BANKING INDUSTRY does not want them and will NOT call them out! Short, sweet and simple!

You are both, of course, abosolutely correct in everything you write. Except one thing.

These are those of us, including some members of this forum, who want the series minted, who are excited about it, and who will collect them. I am one of them.

So, if they happen, rather than lamenting the new coins, be happy for those of us who are excited to see them come about.

When I was first starting coin collecting, in the 1950's, there were no new editions, either regarding regular circulated coins or comenoratives. I think at that point it was the George Washington Carver half dollars which had been the last "special" coin to be minted. I remember wishing and hoping for something new, but it was years before it happened. So, with that background, plus my love of history, perhaps you can see why I, and others, hope for the new Presidential series.

Ya know - it might just be a case of - be careful what you ask for

A few years ago, on the old Coin World forum, I was sort of "talked into" agreeing to coordinate a campaign to get new designs for US coinage. Some of those folks are members of this forum today.

The President, Congress, many others in US Govt. were contacted and even delivered petitions requesting this. It seemed like nothing much happened at the time. And maybe it had little or no effect at all. But we did ask. It seems that now we are, these past couple of years - getting what we asked for - changes.

Thanks, Dock, for the links but these are the same documents that I've read before that say the series will start in 2007. Did you have something that said different.

Not trying to be agumentative, just verifying for my own knowledge. :D

As far as the 2008 date that comes from an article in USA Today http://www.usatoday.com/money/2005-04-26-dollar-usat_x.htm
That reads....To get to the dollar coin legislation to the floor, Castle had to persuade North Dakota, which did not want to have one of its most famous residents, Sacagawea, booted off the dollar coin. The compromise calls for Sacagawea dollars to be minted with the presidential coins — and for the presidential coin rollout to wait until after the Lewis and Clark anniversary celebration ends in 2008.

Without being argumentative here, I think the lady that released that article got it wrong on something. While there is a movement to strike a 24-karat gold coin, it is not the Presidential coin. The Bill never says the Presidential dollar would be gold. It does say in Section 103 regarding the bullion for the First Ladies that it could be gold and that there could be a bronze medal also made but there's nothing on the composition of the Presidential dollar.

It sounds like she got something mixed up betweent the 24-karat gold bullion release and the Pres. dollar to me.

I agree 100%. You would be suprised at the number of people that think the Sacky is made of gold. Results of the government ad campain for "The Gold Dollar". I myself can't imagine anyone could think we were spending gold coins in 2005 or any time in the future.

A far as composition of the new dollar coin the only clue is in this line...

the Director of the United States Mint
should take all reasonable steps to ensure that
all $1 coins minted and issued remain tarnish-
free for as long as possible without incurring
    undue expense;

I figure we will likely end up with the same compound as the Sacky.

What do you make of this?

5 (7) at such time as the Secretary of Treasury
6 determines to be appropriate, and after consultation
7 with the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve
8 System and the submission of notice to the Con-
9 gress, the Secretary should declare to be obsolete
10 any circulating $1 coin that bears the design of the
11 $1 coins being issued immediately before the
12 issuance of coins with the design referred to in sec-
    13 tion 5112(n)(7) of title 31, United States Code;

I think they want to collect up the Ikes and SBA's and melt them down.

Gosh, I sincerely hope not. With their intention of heavily circulating these new dollars, I would think that they would realize that the Sac dollar material does NOT circulate well. Not by any means.

I'm going to re-read that section of the bill to try to understand it better, and probably re-read it again. I've read the snip that you put in the post a few times and I'm not really sure what it says.

I don't know about the Ikes but they would like to remove the SBA's due to the confusion concerning them and quarters. Who knows maybe the SBA will be worth something some day. Looks like the Wicked Witch of the Dollar may come through after all?

It says "Immediately before" so it means SBA. Funny how they can"t just say it in plain language. Anyway, not demonitization, just obsolete, so the banks would have to send them back as they come in. Could be a good time to buy SBAs (high grade).
